Just started an engine rebuild project on my Disco, with the main purpose of locating an 'invisible' water leak and engine noise, finally started it after suddenly started burning oil. Got the head off now and was checking the cam follower sliders, all look ok but several of them have the F stamp facing the rear of the engine instead of towards the front. Is this likely to have caused any problems does anyone know?

Well it is obviously wrong but what the implications are I don't know. There must be a reason for making them directional (it may be for oil flow or thrust angle reasons or just to make sure all the mating surfaces are refitted in the same position). If the followers aren't damaged or worn then I would refit them the correct way round, if the reversed ones show any odd wear patterns relative to the correctly fitted ones I would replace them. May also be worth a look at the bearing surfaces of the pushrods to see it they have any odd markings on them.

Further investigation reveals the cylinder bores have been 're-sleeved and there are exhaust valve imprints on all pistons (after cleaning all the carbon off so must have happened a fair while back. I thought I knew the history of this engine having driven it for 100k of its 230k miles!
