Im more worried about water than dirt as its in the middle of the rainy season here and there is always a road that is flooded somewhere. Without the shafts im afraid the dust caps wont help much if i have to drive through any amount of water.
mounting back up the empty diff seems like the way...

well i took the diff out too cuz i wanted to see what was going on in there (broken cross shaft again..). but i wish i was that easy to get the half shafts out...

iv been running mine reversed for about 4 years now on my daily driver.. never had a problem and they havent fallen off yet..

yes i meant the casing open with the inside of the axle exposed to water etc.

hi Jonathan,
iv already removed the diff and the shafts and put everything back up :doh:. how bad is it that iv left the axle open? is there anything i can do to help protect it without taking everything back out? iv left it coated in oil if that counts for anything.

land rovers are actually quite rare and parts can be very expensive where im from

removing the half shafts wont cause any problems with the wheel bearings? can i remove the whole diff as well?

ok iv removed the front driveshaft but the diff seems badly shattered and actually locked up the tires on me when it first broke. its no longer locked up and it rolls but im worried it locks up again. what can i do to prevent this? ..remove diff and shafts?

Hi all,
my front differential on my disco has just broken and unfortunately i cannot afford a new diff at the moment. is there any way that i can run the discovery in 2wd as it is my daily driver and i need a vehicle :(.

i dont believe its mushroomed but i also dont think its welded to the case because it rotates with the gear.
