Hi all,

my front differential on my disco has just broken and unfortunately i cannot afford a new diff at the moment. is there any way that i can run the discovery in 2wd as it is my daily driver and i need a vehicle :(.

Wont the also end up in blowing the rear diff ?

I ran my 110 with no front prop for a week then replaced it and took the rear prop off for a week so I could refurb them.
Drove no different and didn't blow the diffs:)

ok iv removed the front driveshaft but the diff seems badly shattered and actually locked up the tires on me when it first broke. its no longer locked up and it rolls but im worried it locks up again. what can i do to prevent this? ..remove diff and shafts?

Definitely remove the half shafts if you want to drive it.

I had a rear diff let go in my D1 so I took the rear prop out and drove it in diff lock. Afew days later afew bits of broken diff lodged themselves between the pinion and crownwheel and locked up the rear wheels!!

id imagine the front wheels would be even more dangerous :(

Hi

The best thing you can do is remove the broken front diff and the front propshaft and clean out the broken bits.

You can leave the front half shafts in and just tape up the gap where the diff used to be, The tape is important to keep the axle internals clean.

You can then drive the car using the rear diff only but you must have the centre diff lock engaged.

it is a much harder job changing the diff on the front than it is on the back as you have to remove the wheel hub to pull the half shafts out enough to be able to remove the diff .

This is a temporary measure not a permanent fix.

Jonathan

hi Jonathan,

iv already removed the diff and the shafts and put everything back up . how bad is it that iv left the axle open? is there anything i can do to help protect it without taking everything back out? iv left it coated in oil if that counts for anything.

thanks for the reply

if you've removed the diff, half shafts and front prop.. then it'll be fine won't it
