Ok, that definately sounds like part of the problem as only speed 3 works. 1 and 2 are completely dead. However there was a considerable level of squeaking before it failed, and a burning smell when it did go. A bit more than potentiometer - never heard that term - maybe?

ive realised im being really daft - the metal sleeve is part of the seal and being used to the more flimsy 5258 type seals i thought the metal was part of the axle. so so stupid!!! its how we learn though

Well the springs lift the vehicle, increasing the distance between axle and body while the vehicle is sitting, so at maximum articulation, even if the spring travel extends the same, the total distance that can be reached between body and axle is more.

This is an old thread I know, but I have the same issue. Is it worth worrying about - swivel grease in diff oil?

It depends a bit on how much travel your expecting to use, but I changed mine on my d1 because at maximum articulation it could stretch/break them and I didn't want something like brakes suddenly not working. Id do it for piece of mind.

Right. Been busy but tested it yesterday and play appears to remain the same. The slippage is not as noticeable now either. Don't want to say its gone!

It wasn't the cheapest, certainly wasn't the most expensive either. However it did operate fine before I left it standing. I'll double check when I get home but I didn't notice a unreasonable amount of play in the pedal. Operation feels fine.

I think it could be a ball joint. In my experience a cv normally makes a repetitive clunk/click noise as you turn, a worn ball joint tends to move not that often during lock to lock steering.

Thanks, yeah wycombes ok, its where im originally from but i lived in cumbria for a while though and liked being in the sticks, will have to see about getting back there!!! ive attached one of the disco in its overlanding guise, after escaping some horrible mud in kazakhstan.
