    Buying a 200Tdi

Morning and welcome! 1) I guess for a garage to do the timing belt you`re looking at around the £200 mark. Make sure they change the tensioner and idler pulleys as well. 2) No, it`s not an MOT failure, unless the chassis is badly corroded as well. Needs attending to quickly though, or it...

    cooling fan

Check the temperature sensor in the radiator - that`s usually the problem with fans packing up.

    Discovery 300tdi hazard lights fault

Sounds like a problem with the alarm / immobiliser. Check all the contacts / bulbs etc, but I reckon you`re into wiring and stuff! Try resetting it with the key sequence in the drivers door lock, if you`ve got it.

    Conversion

I`ll have a dig for some power steering info. There`s a conversion on the market for discs on the S3 by somebody or other - can`t remeber who at the moment, but I think it`s the same lot who do the timing gear conversions for the 200 / 300 tdi engines. I`m sure theres also a conversion using the...

    Gearbox breather hole?

Had a look at the pic - what Miniman sez. Mine has something like a core-plug knocked in it with a tiny hole in at at the front, about 1mm in diameter. As for the Webers - I await the outcome with interest! Would suggest you use 32mm chokes with jetting for something like the 1600 crossflow...

    any ideas

Have a look at the oil in the diffs (see if there`s any metallic bits in it), or if there`s any in it! Likewise oil from gearbox and transfer case. Sounds a bit like a diff starting to misbehave. Have a look at hub end-float as well. If the noise reappears every time you press the clutch...

    Anyone know anythng about gearbox's?

Nice one. See - have a little faith!

    Anyone know anythng about gearbox's?

Didn`t think the S111 box was that complicated - certainly much easier than the R380 or the Disco V8 Autobox. Just take it to bits nice and carefully, making sure you`ve got lots of room to lay the parts out in the order you took them off. Wash everything in clean degreaser, one bit at a time...

    Brake disc Thickness

If it`s any consolation, an ex-colleague of mine (who also lectured in Motor Vehicle Engineering, and should have known better), had a pair of front discs on his Rover 2000 that looked like LP records, and were about the same thickness! You can buy brake pipe now that's already plastic-coated...

    any particular grease

Get a big aerosol tin of Motorcycle drive chain wax, and spray them with that. Brush it in before it sets.

    Anyone know anythng about gearbox's?

Sounds like it`s knocked a lump of gear tooth off one of the 3rd gear pair, or the bearing inside 3rd gear has gone AWOL. Take it to bits! You know you like a challenge!

    what type of engine oil...

Shouldn`t need the thick stuff yet by a long way! Stick a good-quality 10w/40 or 15w/40 in it, and it`ll be fine. 81000? Not even run in yet! Thick oil tend to take ages to fill the tappets up if any of them are a bit leaky, and there`s a lot more crank drag until the engine's warm.

    Brake disc Thickness

Morning! According to the Land Rover manual, front discs are a minimum 13mm thick and rears a minimum 12mm thick. This is for none - ABS discs, as far as I can tell. It doesn`t give measurements for the ABS discs! As far as brake pipes are concerned - yes, they do tend to rust. Once they`ve...

    Morning!

Morning, everybody. Yet another new name on the forum list! I found this one in the quest for a wiring diagram for my Disco V8. Still haven`t found one! Why do we buy Land Rovers? Does anybody have a rational answer? I`ve had four of the bl**dy things, they drive me nuts and I still love 'em...
