My box knocks and bangs like hell in 3rd gear. It doesnt jump out, pulls along fine it just sounds like someone is underneath with a lump hammer.

The box has always leaked, I hadnt checked it since i last went offroad and having checked since the knocking it was almost empty. :(

Gearbox specialist locally reckons £300 to fix. I am watching a few boxes on ebay that could be better or worse than mine, who knows. I cant afford the £300 to fix mine, can anyone suggest anything that might cause this? The car is stripped ready to pull the box out!

I am supposed to be going away at the end of the month in it for the weekend! I have to solve this problem soon!

Cheers,

Mike

What have you got to loose have a look inside. Take off an inspection Cover.
You can get parts for gearboxes really cheep at The Buckley Bros and they do Mail Order. http://www.landroverspares.co.uk I use them and they are brill.
It sounds like you got a collapsed bearing and they supply them I think the most expensive one is about £8 WoW BIG MONEY. I love landrovers. If you have a digicam its always a good Idea to take photos of what you are pulling to bits and plenty of them. Why not put a post on here CHEEP GEARBOX NEEDED.
Then you can fit that and pull yours to bits. Also if you do pull it to bits I am sure I can find you a Exploded diagram of it to help you when you have 50 parts allover the place.

Get a post for a cheep gearbox going it works trust me.

We are all there to help.....

Hi

less you know what you are doing or have a photographic memory or even loads and loads of tubs I would be very warey of taking a gearbox appart

IT can be done but everything has to go in exactly where it came from

i would have thought that applied to anything that you took apart, i guess that's why people write workshop manuels. if you enough brains to understand wot you is doing then get a good workshop manuels and follow the instrutions in that.

Didn`t think the S111 box was that complicated - certainly much easier than the R380 or the Disco V8 Autobox. Just take it to bits nice and carefully, making sure you`ve got lots of room to lay the parts out in the order you took them off.

Wash everything in clean degreaser, one bit at a time, and check everything for wear or bits missing while you clean them.

Even the Haynes manual will do for instructions. Have faith!

All sorted :D Thanks to the help of silver classic (cheers chris) everything seems to be OK! Few teeth missing off third gear which we replaced and somehow managed to get it all back together. Beats the hell out of £300 to the gearbox people!

Thanks to everyone for their advice!
