This one's a GM 5L40-E, but might be doable. Access isn't great. Last time I fitted the method worked well, but this time it took hours to align - heavy and awkward without a hydraulic ramp!

Not sure that's possible as the back of the flywheel is pretty inaccessible once transmission is on. There is one spot to get a socket / bolt in but you need to turn the flywheel by hand to then locate the other two bolts as far as I could see. (you can't do that once covered by bellhousing?)

Thanks Phil. It wasn't pulled in with bolts except a little at the top due to weight of transmission pulling away, but there was about 3 hours of lifting, wriggling and locating/relocating before I could pull/push into place. I guess it is probable that there's an issue there and it means it is...

Thanks, the drain is but the filler seems to be about 17mm - could be imperial. I couldn't feel anything on the face of the nut but will take another look...

Yes, appear to be - clunk sounds bigger than that too. Not yet, but on the list - planning to strip and overhaul the rear axle next weekend so will check at the same time.

Thanks both. It did sound towards the rear, so rear axle is probably first place to look, but appreciate sounds are not always where you think. I hope it's not transfer box - I have a spare now, but getting bored taking that out... :( (And it's a PITA on a driveway with just axle stands and...
