...well yes & no ! the inside is ALL important {outside just surface rust...pretty harmless..paint old engine oil} this is from where your ROT may appear.Cure?....flush out mud with clean water let dry & spray a mist coat of 'Dinitrol' [penetrating AND tacky] rust treatment.;)

I'm inclined to go along with this [i'm thinking in Egypt ....'new chassis?...caroliner???']cut out all top/side damage....then cut a strip from top section flatten it out & offer it back to top where it came from[it will be longer] then jack up near bulkhead & gradually let front of chassis...

Those quotes seem reasonable......But if it were mine I would get a second opinion ....145k not high for a properly maintained 300tdi.....I would get head off [probably just H/G?] & go from there [approx.£200-£300] flush /check rad. might be ok if not leaking....if not a recon not...

when you take your foot off the pistons are SUCKING ...so it could just as easily be oil passing valve seals?? what do you all think?:confused:

I wouln't garuntee meeting anyone 'specialy if you were in the ****...it's very remote...& if the narrow rocky section with the nasty drop to the side is wet .....so will be your underwear:eek:

if it's an unknown then drain & refill ATF. 'box has internal oil pump designed[since Rover SD1] to run on it...."if in doubt drainit out"...cheap 'n easy:p

on a more sober note....your motor looks cool, not overdone.....but big[expensive!] tyres are very vulnerable to side wall damage in ruts ..go 235/85 or 7.50 x16
