    It's been a while since I touched a TDV8, but it should have a spindle in the oil filter cap, and there's two smaller O rings on that. I always change them on Rovers... I might be less dedicated with some other brands ;)

    If you're used to petrols, diesel engines will always give you black oils. Like, if you put fresh oil in, start it to circulate it and then check it, it's usually black even with an engine flush product used. Just the way dieseasals are!

    EGR will be a ballache, but well worth it to save that "gum" (which is effectively cutting paste - it's moisture and soot of varying sizes) getting elsewhere... Volvos with excessive EGR quantities have issues like the cylinder head getting scored and needing a rebuild after 35k miles. Go on...

    Actually diagnosing a fault using modern diagnostics is a skill set in itself. It points you to a starting point but it never gives you the answer!

    It's hit and miss pre 2010, some do, some had it as an option and most of them aren't as prone to blocking as later ones. It was the new Euro emissions standards in 2010 that started killing cars (unless they cheated the emissions test)

    Meaning by the time the car tells you your DPF needs attention, it's fooked (I'm thinking of BMW specifically here, they're a bloody nightmare!)

    It is, but lots of them have stupidly narrow regen windows. So, it won't regen with less than X or more than Y grams of soot, but X and Y are so close it's very hard to actually get to that sweet spot. My current job is probably just on the cusp of where I'd need to periodically regen the DPF...
