What have you done to your Freelander today

Replaced the air and fuel filters prior to my bi-annual côntrole technique in April. This is the second time I've changed the fuel filter myself. It didn't want to start right away but it did on the fourth try. I must've lost more fuel than last time; if memory serves it started right up the...

Freelander 1 Slight, regular power loss

Hello all, I've got a bit of a problem with my 2002 TD4 Freelander and I'm here looking for help. I've got a slight but regular loss of power, a bridling you might say, with my 2002 TD4 manual transmission. I've read the posts where the MAF seems to be the problem, and recently I had mine...

What have you done to your Freelander today

Installed the VCU and bearings that I had ordered this summer from Bell. The old VCU was feeling tight and back in May I had pulled it in order to protect the rear end, but couldn't order the part until mid-summer. Once I received the unit I rotated the tires but had to wait until I had driven...

Freelander 1 Freelander TD4 2002 loping at idle -- resolved

Update -- I got the car back yesterday from the garage and it's running great. They replaced the injectors, then found the engine though running well lacked power. Some poking around uncovered air leaks in two of the three little air lines, one of which apparently leads directly to the turbo...

Freelander 1 Freelander TD4 2002 loping at idle -- resolved

Boy wouldn't that be a relief. Replacing the injectors is one thing but I was starting to have visions of € signs drifting upwards like smoke from the opened bonnet.

Freelander 1 Freelander TD4 2002 loping at idle -- resolved

They weren't being categoric. When I dropped the car off last week they hooked it up to their diagnostic computer with me there and saw 10 errors returned, among them low rail pressure. And contrary to my conclusion after pulling the wires one by one, it wasn't just the fourth cylinder...

Freelander 1 Freelander TD4 2002 loping at idle -- resolved

update - A local garage removed the injectors and sent them in for testing, and the results showed the injectors needed replacing. The injection pump showed low pressure as well apparently but the garage is going to install the new injectors then retest.

Freelander 1 Freelander TD4 2002 loping at idle -- resolved

No doubt you're right guineafowl, that'll be the next thing I look at. One of my neighbors is the local go-to guy for all things mechanical. I won't ask him to do the work but I reckon he can make a recommendation as to where to take it. I'll keep you posted.

Freelander 1 Freelander TD4 2002 loping at idle -- resolved

Just a quick update, the engine goes back and forth between running a bit rough and running smoothly. My driving behavior doesn't seem to have any bearing on how it runs. Unplugging the HP sensor doesn't seem to make a difference.

What have you done to your Freelander today

Alibro, color me sheepish , I tried again today and that's exactly what happened. If I'd tapped just a little harder the other day they would had just fallen off I'm sure. The difference today was that I jacked it up higher, enough for me to bring more force to bear, and I used a bigger...

Freelander 1 Freelander TD4 2002 loping at idle -- resolved

Well, passed MOT with flying colors today (got the date moved up as I was getting impatient) but the blasted thing started the rough idle business again on the way over to the garage. Couldn't tell for sure but it even looked like it was idling roughly during the test but it still passed. I...

What have you done to your Freelander today

Passed MOT today. Smog numbers better than two years ago, I guess all that fretting and changing all the filters I could find did some good. Saturday I put the car on jacks meaning to pull the VCU and propshafts. Got all 14 bolts out but couldn't budge the prop shafts from their respective...

    TD4 Crankcase Filter

I'm still optimistic for the most part. The M47/TD4 is a good motor and not that old, and as long as everything is kept up I should be OK. I mean, that engine is in an awful lot of cars and I can't see all those vehicles being taken off the road en masse like that. I know I should rebuild the...

    VCU Torque test results

2002 w/ 215k km. VCU never been changed. Been afraid to do the owut -- with good reason it looks like: with 5 L of water hanging off a lever at 1,2 m it took 2,5 minutes. I'm ordering a rebuilt VCU from Bell this month, was hoping it would hold just a lttle longer but yikes now I may pull it off...

    TD4 Crankcase Filter

Now you tell me! Actually I'm driven by the concern that my engine won't pass smog limits of our local MOT, required bi-annually. It passed two years ago but not by a whole lot and feel I can't afford to overlook any possibility that may help the car run cleaner, what with the next one coming up...
