what are the usual causes for a "lumpy" tick over on a 1.8i

ticks over between 500-900 ish (engine warm or cold)

could it have anything to do with there being a small amount of free play on the throttle pedal?
can this play be adjusted?

other than this it runs really well, good mpg, good pick up and acceleration

awaiting pi55 taking and do a search comments

Get some expensive spark plugs and use super unleaded - cured mine.

May have sticky egr valve !! Causes strange pulsing at low rpm ! Also maf sensor if it has one ! May be !!
A 1.8 FL has neither.
A poor idle may be caused by allsorts of things.Dying dizzy cap, plugs, leads etc will all do it.Air leaks or a dying oxygen sensor will also have the same effect.
Not all of the causes are easy to spot - good luck.

Play in cable you can adjust at the throttle gismo - er remove clip and turn adjuster anti clockwise, replace clip iirc.

if its dry in the morn a'l have a look at the "gismo" and see what i can do.

now if you could perhaps show a pic of this gismo or explain where it is, i would be very grateful

Where the cable gets to the RH end of the engine and connects to the gismo. It looks a bit like the adjuster on a bicycle brake cable. Sure you know that there needs to be some slack in it. o yea, the other thing is the re set throttle position - iirc you switch on (not start) and pump the throttle 5x. Can somebody back me up on this??

cheers bud, a couple of my pals think there is too much play too, it doesn't bother me too much but i would like a little less play (im sure wor lass has said this too)

iv just been checking out the throttle position re set and if what im reading is right, you must be too;)

OK,if its an 02my it wont have a dizzy, you didnt state the age of the car in your original post.Same deal though where plugs and the two cyls which have leads are concerned.
If a visual check does not help then a code read of the engine ecu would help,I dont see much of petrol FL 1's now so I'm a bit rusty on them, from memory the engine ecu is Mems S3 2000. Any fault codes should be reasonably accurate if they are recent. But often live data displays give a much better idea of what is going on - or not as the case may be.I guess an OBD II code reader should be able to communicate with your car,I only use Testbook on these so you may need further advice of what will work properly on your car.
