I have looked at a few posts about off road tyres, (and thanks for the info)
But I am looking for some recommendations ( you have used them and would use them again) for good road tyres.
cost is important but so is rating so I don't want to go below C,C,
at the moment I am looking at

thanks ahead of time

Why would you fit just normal road tyres? I know we're coming into Spring soon, but surely some original spec M&S tyres give the best of both worlds and won't leave you stuck next winter? Goodyear Wrangler, Pirelli Scorpion STR & Michelin Latitude would be what I'd choose from

i had pirelli scorpion str's ..
recently needed to change at least 2 .. or all 4 ..

i was told that pirelli had stopped making them
( despite appearing on their uk website
don't know if that's true or not

cut a long story short ..

i ended up fitting 4 michelin latitude's ..
similar spec .. i.e. all season ..
supposed to be similar for snow .. and lite offroading ..

anyhow .. the michelin's latitude's are
much quieter
give a slightly smoother ride over bumps
are supposed to have better ( lower ) rolling resistance

on first trip .. the road-noise reduction was very evident ..
.. can't yet comment regarding grip in snow :) not seen any this winter ..

for some reason they are holding air-pressure far better than the pirelli's did
but .. that could be down to valves .. or something unknown else
( don't know .. but .. had them fitted at the same place that fitted the prev. pirelli's )

Pirellis still for sale at my local place, but the price has jumped from £75 fitted each last summer to £115 each. The reason I didn't get bf Goodrich a/t at the time was the price of them but I might aswell get them now

And +1 to what ses says. You don't have to go for knobblys but at least go with what's supposed to be on it like a m+s tyre? My scorpions have performed well. Done about 20k since last summer so the fronts soon need sorting

I have a set of Five Continental Cross Contac M/S Winter Tyres 215/65 R16 98T on the Freelander 16' standard alloys. But I have read the it is not a good idea to run winter tyres in summer or for long runs on the motorway as they will over heat. So I was going to keep them for when needed (winter white stuff about) and get a set to replace the road tyres on the 17' alloys I have on at the moment

Conti Cross Contact's aren't "winter" tyres, they're M&S tyres, or as they're most often called "All Season", ie, largely suitable for anything that happens from 1st January to 31st December.

Running pure "winter" tyres like Epicuser's all year round isn't a problem either, they wear faster than normal tyres because they contain more natural rubber to keep them supple when it gets cold and the normal silica compound hardens. But they're still rated to the same speed ratings as any other tyre so there's nothing to worry about on that front.

Pure dedicated winter tyres aren't really needed in this country especially on a Land Rover, M&S will give you the best of both worlds and will be more than you could ever need for normal road driving every day of the year, having a set of summer & winter tyres when the car was designed for M&S tyres anyway is just really wasting money, and when you go somewhere that's a little muddy in the summer on the summer tyres you'll get stuck, 4wd is only as good as the tyres that are fitted.

I'm with SES88 on this one. I can't see the point in having summer and winter tyres. I simply use Yokohama Geolandars. They are good all year in any weather. And they will last 30,000+ miles.
