I'm surprised your rocket had a Freelander display Ming. They're not the most reliable in the universe you know !
 
Its the same fault that Nokia mobile phones suffer from...the elastomers at either side of the screen lose their contacts...I just licked mine and stuck it back together..lol...worked fine..
New elastomers for mobiles are 99p a go so I wonder where you can get hold of some that fit the freelander clock...could make a fortune on ebay!!
I always cover my clock when parked in summer now...

Sorry to bother but what do you mean by "masking tape" please ?? Is it the insulating plastic tape (in all kind of colours) used to insulate electrical contacts or so ??

Masking tape is paper tape, used in the decorating industry to mask areas that need masking or protection. Available at all good DIY stores ;)

Thanks a lot and I see what you mean now, it's the kind of paper you stick on doors or windows when you have to paint so that you have a lined up side and you can paint without having to worry at all (except for the width of the tape?:D ). Thanks again and good luck with whatever you decide for your Hippo.
 
Last time I tried to fix the display I put some extra pressure between the ribbon contacts and the rubber band around the white plastic innerhousing by adding a piece of an old bicycle innertube, it worked great until the car came out and in the sun than I started to loose again parts of the digits, after reading the above post re cleaning the contacts etc. I opened the unit again today but I did not peal away the ribbon all the way off the board, I left the last bit attached to it and just cleaned the visible 3/4th of the contacts. I tried to clean it with alcohol but it didn't work out too well so I took a small flat screwdriver and gently scraped off the grey/black layer on the contacts until the copper was clean again, wiped off as much as possible the contactstrips of the ribbon as well and as the ribbon was not detached completely no need to position it, just fold it back as it was and put a piece of cellotape both sides, I first used some layers of masking tape but that was too visible white in the display so I took it apart again and as I had no black plastic insulation tape I used red (6 layers of it) tape instead, I also fixed with cellotape the green plastic piece (through which the green colour for the display comes) on the white housing as first time I noticed the light on top of the display was yellow meaning that the green plastic plate had moved during the assembling. The careful cutting was unfortunately on the top line not too careful as the knife went off the edge which means I now have a line in the display but guess I can live with that, at least everything is visible again and looks rather steady, curious to see how it behaves when it becomes warmer again. If it stays ok I think that it is the contacts going bad that causes the displays to fade away as the first time with the rubber pieces inserted I put more pressure on the total as now with the 6 layers of plastic tape, only difference that now the contacts are cleaned. Unfortunately forgot to take some pictures of the different steps while I was onto it this afternoon. Thanks again Darrnw, you saved me (and hopefully others) money. Take care.

Re the radio/clock display, today the car has been the whole day in the sun again and the display still looks brilliant, the digits even look blacker than when new, thus cleaning the contacts pays definitely off. Furthermore that remaining edge of red tape looks really good in real life, better than you will expect by seeing the attached picture. (will post the picture in a sec but have taken it after I started this entry, if I now go to have it ready I loose everything above, so patience pse). On the picture you can also see where I cut in the display, by putting it together the display got a little cross and by cutting the last layer of masking tape I hit the display, when I put it under power I saw the display was cross (the right hand side was pointing down compared to the left hand side) and the white edge of the masking paper didn't look nice (to me anyway) so I took it apart again and by re-assembling it with the red tape I first fixed the display in the correct position with some cellotape, after pealing off the last layer of red insulation tape I saw the cutting, shame....)

well that's not minutes but seconds you see. No, I took the picture just after I put the contact on so it shows the station I installed on postition 1 of the radio is located on 105.3 Mhz. If I'd waited a little the time would have come up with only the P1 indication on the left and the time on the right.

Id love to willo ! Just dont have the time or the energy to push it about all day to get 60mpg out of it;)
 
Ok, maybe 60mpg was a little white lie :(
She can however squeaze 24mpg on a run. You have to remember though you have lots of horses under the bonnet to play with and they're very thirsty in there.
I thought she sounded great until my mate brought his Dads Aston Martin DB7 Vantage Volante round last night. Now that sounds the muts nuts. V12 6 litre which gives on average 16mpg. Yes, 3mpg less than my average :( What's that all about?

In my opinion there is only one way to get 60 mpg and that is the one below:D :D :

The new motor I have can get 49mpg according to the manual. That's on a run and if I can resist the urge to plant my foot to the floor........which is very hard to resist to be honest :D
 
Hi all,

After the heat-wave we had here (5 days in a row of over 25°C with three of these days in a row going over 30°C) the temperature here dropped now to 15°C, can yhou imagin. But reason for my entry is that during this warm period the fixed display remained ok and looks better than new, also what I noticed is that during a 260 kms trip I did yesterday I had a rattle less in my dashboard, so it looks as the layers of tape added in fixing the display took away some play in the unit that caused a rattle I could not locate and which I had since the car was new. Won in two fields on this.
 
Apologies for the late reply! Not been at my comp for a few days!
Any way here goes for those who are interested PLEASE NOTE I hold no responsiblity for any damage caused by attempting this! Mine is still working perfectly I made a slight alteration from the mouse mat to masking tape but my screen as I say mine was dead but now works perfect in any conditions (heater on sunlight etc) If you've a knackered clock it may be worth trying

1 Pull the clock to pieces you should have a lcd screen attached by a ribbon to a pcb.Carefully peal away the ribbon from the board. You may notice that the connections are black on the Pcb put some lighter fluid or similar fluid on a piece of kitchen roll and clean the connections these will then go back to the original brass colour! Then gently wipe over the ribbon connector no need to go too daft cleaning this. Then get a piece of cellotape slightly larger than the ribbon and stick it to it. Next place the pcb down and line the ribbon back up with the connections lining up don't worry if it isn't pushing them together as long as they are lined up.You can turn the pcb over and hold put some tape on the other side to hold it more securely in place.

2 There should be a piece of rubber that wraps around the white plastic part of the clock make sure this is in place this is the thing that presses the ribbon to the board. Give this a wipe with the lighter fluid to make sure it is clean.

3 Get some masking tape(This was used to replace a mouse mat gasket I made but didn't hold it's shape, it compressed too much) cover the screen (side that you would see) with 7 or 8 pieces so that you have a reasonable thickness over the entire screen. Then carefully trim the tape with a craft knife so it is the same size as the complete screen.

4 Re assemble the clock.

5 You will notice you can't see the screen because of the masking tape. Again VERY Carefully,go around the edge of the screen with craft knife so that you can then peal of the tape to reveal the display.

6 Try it and all being well you have a working display if you have any blank spots remove screen and put more layers of masking tape on the screen to build up the thickness further and trim as before.


Hopefully this will help some of you and as I say It worked perfectly for me but I take no responsibilty for anybody who trys it and it doesn't work for. Maybe try it as a last resort that's what I did and I saved the price of a clock.
How do you remove the clock from the facia? Do you just prise it out to access the ribbon cable?
 
First, with a small flat screwdriver, remove the exterior plastic casing that covers the sides of the disàplay. Then you can see two torxscrews you can remove after which you can pull the whole display out of the facia, on the back you see then the connector, by pussing on a button you can release it and remove the connector from the display casing. afterwards you have to 'unclick' the housing and take the parts apart but all that is explained in your previous quoted post. Good luck.
