Just a small follow-up to encourage those who still suffer with an 'invalid' display but haven't had the nerve/courage to fix it as described. Mine still working very well (as mentioned even better than new). So go ahead and do it.:)

Guys!

Had the same problem with my clock and decided to be brave tonight and pull the thing apart.

I took it out the dash and split all the bits apart then using PCB cleaner from Maplin and a cotton bud carefully cleaned under the ribbon cable where it contacts the circuit board and display

Then after reading about all the members who had used insulating tape / masking tape I looked around for an easier way to raise the level of the black rubber banding which contacts the ribbon cable to the boards when its put together.

I removed the rubber banding and where it sits in the channels cut lengths of garden strimmer cord and tacked them into place using a couple of drops of suoerglue. There are two channels - a long one under the display and a short one for the circuit board.

Then i replaced the banding and again tacked this to the strimmer cord using super glue.

Everything then clipped back together and time to test - guess what? All the characters now work perfectly!

PS If you have the original radio unit then pressing preset key 3 and powering on the unit goes into some sort of test thing - hold the key whilst the display says land rover then it will show you every cell on the display - USEFUL? maybe not!!

Next is a bit more challenging - time to change the clutch........

I picked up some 12V clear minature bulbs from Homebase after Christmas - they're actually 'push in' replacements for 'fairy lights' but once removed from their plastic carrier they're just standard lamps with leads.
I just re-used the LR plastic twisty carrier thingy and job done!

Best of all the pack of bulbs (10 in the pack) was 19p - cheapest replacement part on the car I think!

excellent fix Darrnw

followed the instructions, but made plastic templates instead of the masking tape, works a dream. I even had some blue sheet plastic for the colour filter, once i tested it working, replaced the green sheet with the blue. (only cus i'm sad and like it blue!!)

well please with this forum, wish i found it years ago when had my disco and series:doh:

I changed the old radio display / clock with the new version that just shows the time, but the radio is not working anymore. Any ideas how I can make my the radio work again ?
