A friend of mine has a hippo & in this picture where there is a horizontal grab handle where the passenger airbag is. Does the handle take the place of the airbag or has it been moved.

duz this mean, Tiny, that yu cud fit the earlier control box and grab handle instead of the later control box and air bag?
would it work?

If you mean - is the air bag system modular? then no it would have been set from component manufacture.

The air bag system fills the void of the dash stowage box. LR then placed cup holders in the centre (which personally I thought was a bit of an after thought)

wot i meant is the air bag system goes thro a controle module, which controles both airbags - surely the control module cud be changed for an earlier one which just controled the one airbag - that might eliminate errors on the canbus n stuff - yes?

Thats thinking outside the box MHM :D

Earlier models have the Sagem AC4 control unit and 2002 onwards have the Siemens type 1 according to Rovacom site

Would be interested to see if they are a straight swap, obviously needing system diagnosis and reset

i am not sure that it wud still be worth it - just to fit a child seat. But it mite be an option. Are air bags covered as part of the MOT - if so it mite affect that too.

Tess - just realised that in the photo there are two fobs attached to the keys.

This can confuse the alarm system, as only one of the fobs has a synchronised rolling signal at a time. Better to separate them

LR & Mad,
My '98 Xedi has no grab rail, but a passenger airbag, if its got the early module, that means that the early module could be set up for driver only or driver/passenger control, yes?

Not sure if its as straight forward as that.

It would appear that the systems were not modular but 'sealed' at the time of component manufacture. Its been discussed on Rover forums and as yet no-one has found a way around this problem.

Always a first time I guess

have a look at this pic - this is the hippoo with 2 air bags - if the 2nd air bag was not fitted - i assume the controller senses this and errors - the early (one air bag controller must only have one sense line for the drivers air bag - so if the early controller was fitted - it might be ok - your thoughts?

I have looked at the other lr rave info and they appear to either have no air bag - or two :(

maybe the "method of operation" mite help - will continue looking :D

Looking at the other fred on airbags, it may be the case that 'ES' models are only spec'd with one airbag, that might be the way to go?

Failing that, wait till the nappy dweller is 6 months + old, then you can use a forward facing seat wiv no probs. My sprout luvs the view out the front, cos its so high up...thats when the GL starts in the first place..:p

Nice way to get double the money out of one bit...:p

The picture I posted is not my car but it is an 02 model. Was it a factory option to delete the airbag & fit the handle? If it was then I suppose it would be a pain to remove & fit the handle

Tess

there are 2 different modules, depends wether pass air bag is fitted or not, if you remove or add an air bag, you'll need to fit the appropriate module, the wiring is there on all models.

with regard to the key fobs, this is a 2002> car so the transponder is in the key not the fob, having 2 fobs on the same ring wont cause any problems like it does on defenders, have two fobs together with them and they wont start!
