Hi folks

Tech query?? Freelander 1.8 K-series

Trying to fit new timing belt and cant get pulley bolt to loosen,

I have put the car in 1st gear and clamped the brake pedal down. The pulley is still turning when I try to loosen with torque wrench.

I dont want to have to remove transmission to lock flywheel

Any tips on how to lossen the bolt and keep the pulley taut would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

They're a B@st@rd matey I had to crack 1 abit back with the unit out of the car air ratchet would be best. I used a good ring spanner with a piece of metal tube to extend it, try doing it up abit 1st ...good luck feller and watch those bloody knuckles...:)

Soak with penatration oil fer 24hrs , then wif blow torch slightly heat pully and as cartman says good ring spanner tighten first and with a metal tube over spanner give a good whack with hammer, best oh luck. . . :)

Cheers guys for the tips.

I tried with a 250Nm torque wrench for leverage but still no joy.
Looks like I am on my way to buy a new 2lb hammer for showing that sucker whos boss lol.

I also took the starter motor off the freelander but cant see any abvious point where to bolt a flywheel locking tool, looks like it would have to be specially made.

Ya can lock up the engine ,its easy just follow instructions in haines manwell, as you have most off it orft anyhow as your changing your belt, be very carefull and follow the locking destructions to the letter ,and one tooth out can cause all sorts of problems ,and best oh luck. . . :)

Thanks Ming,

I have big concerns now, my timing is well out. when the crank pulley is at the correct position the cam shafts are not where they should be.

They must be out of sync by 2 teeth, I think the belt has stretched with during the process of trying to loosen the bolt.

Is it simply a case of resetting the cam sprockets with holding and lock tool once the timing belt is off?

just cut ya old belt, and yes ya have to take that pully orft, using the haines or w/shop procedure get ya sprocket in exact position when happy and belt on tighen belt too the spec, take all ya locking gear orft ,job done,nb do not try and stretch new belt over pulley, this is a no go,common sence and good practice at all times ,and follow book to the end, best oh luck. . .:)

Excellent!! Thanks for the reassurance, thought I'd messed things up.

Finally got the nut undone - brut force and ignorance, the new 4lb hammer did the trick, proceeding with the change over at the weekend if the weather holds.

Ming thanks again - ever the super hero, never mind Flash .lol.
