hi ALL
I have a 2005 TD4 facelift SE 1951cc after reading on here that you can do a MOD to get rid of the old sponge crankcase filter and replace with a plastic cone type bmw part No BC10 32J1A. 11 12 7 799 224 Breather. I yesterday purchased one of these from Chandler my local BMW Agent. I cannot get it to fit just will not go in seems to go down part way then rocks around think I could have got incorrect part.
Has any body out there done this MOD on this year of Freelander and if so what was the part No of said part so i can take back part and exchange it for the right one.

Hi TD John
Rustymark mark from the link you give me seems to have 2000 year BMW engine there must be a change from 2000 to 2005 years. Been trying all day to see how it could be fitted. But the light and its gtting colder now so washed old filter and have put it back together. The BMW Part cost £39 so looks as if I could have got th incorrect part.

Hi Steve, :caked:
The thread I gave is probably your solution.
Mine is a '06 HSE TD4 and I had the same problem.
Solution is half way down the second page with picy's. :bounce:
Even got the mighty Ming's nod - :cool2:

Hi, Bought the BMW part as described and removed old filter. Had only done 18k but was spongy and thick oily residue - don't think too much air was gettin' thro'.
Assembled the two parts of new filter unit and offered up to engine - won't go in - seems to go part way then rocks about middle? On comparing the original and the new unit there is a small cut-out in the web of the new oil catcher nearest the air valve end. The old (sponge) unit had a large clearance around the inside of the casing so did not have the problem. The cut out in the new unit does not align with the guide on the filter casing? I cut a new slot in the catcher's web to allow the unit to seat properly and all went in ok. Thanks for your info.

I take it this is what you are talking about but if you start cutting into the web the filter becomes U/S.

Hi Steve,
The 'web' is a flat plastic shape around the outside of the working parts, there is a smaller clearance around the web on the BMW part than the old LR part.
The standard fitting (when on the matching BMW engine) has the alignment rib going through the slot in the web. On mine the alignment rib was a little more around the housing. Probably a hang-over from the earlier days when BMW and LR used the same castings? The later ones (yours and mine) seem to have no problems with the original LR filters (check the clearance around the web on the LR part - it's huge).
Fitting the newer BMW part with a larger web fouls the location rib on the LR engine - cutting a new slot fixed it.
(perhaps the BMW engine design moved on after they parted ways with LR?)
Check it out - There is a good 0.5 - 0.8 mm clearance all around the web when it is fitted so I don't think an extra 1.5mm cut out will affect the performance of the new improved BMW oil seperator.
Nothing goes on above the web anyway? All the oil and mist is output from the cones below the web and goes down into the engine.
If you still don't feel confident - don't do it.
The part I fitted was as RustyMark described - when I went to my local BMW dealer the parts man looked at Marks photo - typed in the number from memory and told me they had sold 4 or 5 that week over the counter - a well known breather problem. ;) ;)
Hope this helps? :) :) :)
