Got a new aux drive belt for my TD4 and wondering if I need to jack up the front to change it. Haynes says yes, RAVE says no. I'd trust RAVE over Haynes but might be doing it this weekend when away at my parents so need to know whether to take the trolley jack/axle stands with me or not bother and just go in through the side only.

I'm sure lots of you have done it - any tips that RAVE doesn't mention?

When i did mine i changed both [got AC] and yes as i recall i did take drivers side wheel off [chock it up] take off plastic cowell , fink i did a right up sumwear bout it ,anyhows ita reet pig of a job, so check ma right up if yer can find it as i found a trick in holding that adjuster. . . . .:)

As Ming says a pig of a job. Go in through the RH wheel arch. The tensioner is very strong I ended up with a jack under the end of an extension bar to rotate it enough to get the belt over the pulley. After a couple of attempts to do it by muscle power I ran out of torque in my arm.

OK I JUST REMEMBERD HOW I DID IT. . . . [OOPS CAPS ON] i ferget wot size the spanner was but it was very tight [tween adjuster spring loader and subframe] so a spanner wiff no offset was used. . . .you locate spring adjuster and pull towards rear off motor [get a pait off molegrips that can clamp the sub frame] trick was to use the grips to stop spanner coming back. . . . . leaving both hand free to fiddle,[has to be a long shank spanner] i used a big adjustable that just fitted :) you will have to unclamp it to get the belt out. . . . on putting back ,put over every pully except the rh big wun. . . . .again use the Ming clamp method ,and slip over rh big pulley. . . .release clamp . . . .check all is correct and remember its toothed. . . . .un best oh luck :) :) :)

Cheers for that Ming, I decided against doing it while away as I ran out of time, but should get round to it in the next week or so. Glad I didn't try it without all my tools and a pub close by to retire to when it all gets difficult...
