Rusty Mud Flap Brackets

Recently decided to get the Discovery Waxoyled as I plan on keeping it for a number of years.

Prior to booking it in I wanted to fix and problems before the treatment.

I have noticed that the offside front and nearside rear mud flap brackets were very badly corroded and in fact the front one was non existent.

On closer examination I found this

Front -


Rear -


that was all that was left of the bracket.

I decided rather than buy the brackets to try and fabricate them, they are pricey for what they are and in my opinion not worth the £25 for the front and £45 for the back.

I had recently bought a MIG welder and managed to get hold of the front panels from Storage heaters that a mate had replaced, I was going to use this to practice welding, but it seemed the ideal material to make the flap brackets from.

This is want I managed to come up with

What I did find was that had I bought replacement parts I doubt very much they would have fitted properly due to the corrosion and would have required additional parts.

The Disco has now been waxolyed and looking much better.

Got the bug at the moment and next job is removing the window runners, to repaint and get rid of the rust.

saved some money and got the feeling of a good job done

Nice. Always good to replace something without having to buy hew ..

Don't worry they were quite dry with no messy discharge or stains :baby:

Iv'e got plenty of fabrication to do myself.

I have also noticed small holes appearing in the front mud guard section not as bed as yours but still I don't want it to get there. Just for my own clarity are these replacement parts bolted on or can I see pop rivets? Unsure

I don't have a welder or the skills but could do with knowing how to remove the old and replace the new if anyone can advise.

No idea. This thread refers to the rears

Yes I got that but was wondering what you had done with the front seeing as there was only a pile of rust left? It was only a query sorry I asked.

Had another look and you are quite right, one side of the front was gubbed.
The bracket is held by nuts and bolts but mine were so badly corroded that when I replaced it
I put it back together using rivets.

Was a while ago and I've got a memory like a sieve:doh:

Thanks for that I'll get a good look soon and see how bad the rust is around the bolts, will buy a rivet gun just in case..

Don't know if Disco 2 is different, but this is all that was left of my o/s front Disco 1.




snapped all 3 bolts trying to get nuts off, so I went in through the footwell.

Lifted up the carpet, and the soaking wet sound foam stuff and found this !!






oooooo errrrrrrrr.

there was a taped down plate with the remains of the three attached mudflap bolts.

took that out and I can probably put three new bolts in with oversize washers to get it going for the next few months.


But how should I tackle that rust ????

Cut it out....weld in new. Only way I'm afraid.

I've tried most of these. Got some stuff in the garage that the Navy are supposed to use on ships. I would only use them as a stop gap until I can get it cut out and replaced.

Teefin Just done mine (Disco 1) part nos 392678 / 392679 just used m6 nut and bolts 3 ea to body 4 to mud flap iirc much easier than rears

Excellent news hope I don't find horrors but think I will catch it early enough. Any issues getting them out I hear bolts prone to shearing.
I take it you had to get under carpets to get to the bolts?

Yes mate when i did the rears every bolt snapped

I've just realised is yours aD2 if so part nos are CAX100060/CAX100070



Luckily enough the top half of my bracket were still ok so i welded on to them without taking out the strip up from inside. Much better things to do with £40
