make sure that those 3 earths in line in front RH side of engine bay are well tighten, especially the middle one(u have to remove the battery cover), cos a bad earth there could lead to ECU failure.... dont ask me how do i know:mad:

Hi guys found an earth that was loose enough to turn with finger & thumb. It was the one in the middle of the bulkhead, just underneath the front windscreen wipers. I have now tightened it & driven 35 miles with no issues. I will see how she performs in the morning, hopefully all is well & sorted. A massive thanks to all that helped.

Ok peeps problems come back again but slightly worse, I'm driving with stereo on, I flash main beam & stereo goes off, and then comes back on again. Sometimes I'm getting 3 chimes as if I'm trying to activate hight mode whilst going along. ( strange). Iv even had to put in stereo code a few times too & clock has to be reset. ( it's as if I have disconnected the bettery terminal, which I haven't). Oh and today at tesco I went to crank the disco over & she was dead, no lights on dash nothing, as if the battery had been removed. I then jiggled the key and then bam everything came back to life as normal. I would love to hear some ideas folks as to where to go from here, it's doing my nut in. Cheers guys

check earths and clean and power connections as well

disconnect the battery, remove the interior fusebox and check all the plugs behind it...there might be some corrosion...give them a contact spray and make sure they are plugged well, and that the fuses are not loosen in theyrs holders

Ok thanks SF, I will try that at first light. Saying that it does sort of play up when the roads are wet & it's raining. I have found wet carpet under the foot pedals, and rusty under the steering compartment in the fuse box area. Any ideas where the water would be getting in & is this a common place to leak on disco 2s?

The fact that OP states that "jiggling" the key sorts things out would suggest to me that the ignition switch itself could be at fault.

Just to let everybody know that the 3 earth studs on the bracket on the RH inner wing were the most critical earth studs on the vehicle.

Here's an update guys, iv checked the fusebox under steering compartment for ingress, its bone dry & fuses all ok too. On the other hand there is water coming in because the floor is like niagra falls. Iv checked the passenger side, the bcu & compartment area all bone dry as it should be. The floor is also bone dry too. I cleaned the battery terminals & put copper grease on them, but on closer inspection the circle is dark, so I'm guessing the battery is close to being fooked. Battery has been on the disco since I've had it, which is 5 years, so there is no telling how old it is. So new one tomorrow to be fitted.
Could a poor performing battery cause the problems I've been having by any chance?

A weak battery wont give you intermittent faults... as said the ignition switch/plug/wiring is the first to be checked(the black plastic thing at the end of the barrel)

Ok SF thanks that'll be next to check. If there is a fault with the ignition switch, could that be the causing of the 3 chimes, & reset the radio whilst flashing the headlights?
And if so, what's the best way to check the ignition switch to see if its faulty?

that's hard to check really...make sure at least that the plug is well connected.... if it plays up when you jiggle the key that's the first suspect usually

I too had strange goings on a few months back and thanks to the excellent guidance on the forum all my spurious electrical faults seem to have cleared up.

My electrical gremlins started as soon as I replaced the solenoid in the starter motor. I did this as I was having problems similar to what you describe and having to wiggle the ignition key to get the thing to start - In hindsight I think it was coincidence that it eventually fired up. It wasn't the ignition switch at fault.

To try and find the cause of all the strange electrical shenanigans Sierrafery suggested (amongst other things) I check for moisture ingress behind the passenger side glove box where the BCU lives. I did and found it initially to be dry however on closer inspection, and when I disconnected it, I did find some evidence of moisture where it shouldn't be.

Not being too technically minded I gave it a good shake and dried it and put it all back together again and lo and behold - every single electrical fault disappeared.

Worth a try - disconnect the battery first!

I have put wd40 in all the connectors, under dash, bonnet, & interior & exterior lights. There's a huge bundle of wires coming through a rubber bung behind drivers side fuse box. There were water marks beneath the bung so iv squirted **** loads of silicone in there. Iv put grease around the sunroof seals to keep em supple & keep water at bay. Iv put clear silicone around alpine windows ( very neatly). Iv cleaned battery terminals & put copper grease on them. Iv found what I think is an earth, under the drivers side sill was badly corroded over so iv cleaned this up and also put copper ease on to protect. There are two rubber ends either side of the plastic tray at bottom of windscreen (under wipers). These were worn, so water was draining in to the bulkhead instead of going off to the inside of the wing drain away. I have filled the slots with silicone to seal & stick these permanently. I drove to & from work today & so far no problems. I will just have to wait for the next down pour to see if they will return. Oh and a friend is lending me a dehumidifier to dry the old dear out. So fingers crossed, & thanks for your help.
