Quick Qeustion, Please forgive me if it is a stupid one as still learning.
Can I fit a tow ball, I have somthing like this 3500kg DixonBate towball pin/jaw trailer hitch/coupling For Landrover/Rangerover | eBay straight on to my Defender 90 rear crossmember, in the two holes that are drilled. Or do I need brackets ect??
Thanks Kevin

useually youll need a drop plate fitted first otherwise it will be too high.
some of the drop plates have 2 additional brackets that tie the bottom to the chassie to make it nice and ridgid.

NO yu can't. & if yu did you'd not be able to attach anything to it cos it'd be too high. If you want something for recovery purposes only get a nato hitch (Make sure it has the backing plate) or a dedicated rear recovery eye. Better still buy a pair of forged Jate rings.

For towing a normal trailer behind a 90/110 you'll need a drop plate with stabilisers.

This is what you want.

Thanks for replys. I do have a full dropplate too, excactly like the ones pictured here, Only I do not have the brackets that bolt to the chassis.
Can these be bought separate??
Thanks

you need them, or things will bend....

if you dont have them, you could just make them, they're only made of angle...

i have a q :)

what will bend? I seem to have a heavy duty xmember on the back of mine and i was thinking about fitting the dixon bate without the supports.

metal looks to be 3/4mm thick and goes all the way around (if you know what i mean). the holes in it are m14/m16 tubed and welded.

i didn't fit it, it looks like someone has made it for towing. Ignore the current setup, it's a test.

think it'll work ok without the supports?

Personally I would fit support to stop any flexing and stress failure, plus insurance won't pay out if modified from expected standard.

ah right, i wouldn't have thought the dixon bates metal would flex as it looks pretty thick.

insurance is a good point though, i'll fit them.

reason i ask is that they look quite low and the backend sometimes touches mud.. ooer

Think its more that they spread the attachment points, and hence the load, over a much wider area of the chassis :)

I always take the whole thing off when Im not towing, it is quick once yo have done it a few times, I just take off the leccy socket and put it in a bag and wiretie to the body underneath. Then remove the whole frame.

I have seen someone put the tow hitch over a tree stump on a steep downhill and left hanging, they had to jack it off the stump :D
