I seem to have developed a some play in the steering on my 90 300tdi. I've checked the wheel bearings but they seem ok. Tracking also appears fine with no wearing evident on the tyres.

Any ideas....someone suggested that the steering box is a common fault. How can I test for this.?

get underneath to look at the steering box and have an assistant turn the steering lock to lock

it will become evident if the box is worn ;)

open bonnet with wheels straight ahead ,rock steering linkage near the box ,shouldnt have any free play

When I first got my 110 the steering wheel went from 12 o clock to 5 0 clock positions without moving the wheels!! Driving home was scary

Turned out to be a loose droparm nut, worn droparm ball joint, 3 goosed TRE's and a worn steering shaft u/j :eek::eek::eek:

Oh and a new seal under the steering box. Steering's as tight as me wife now - can't decide if that's a good thing or not!!

Being tight is never clssed as a problem! when its like throwing a sausage down the dartford tunnel iswhen you gotta worry!

Mine had lods of play when i 1st got it, turned out to be the droparm nut was on by a thread

Mine is wreaking my head too at the moment. The drop-arm ball-joint nut keeps loosening (partly due to the shaking) but it makes no difference once tight. Still gets a serious dose of the shakes while driving at speeds over 30mph. All the balljoints in the steering arms are good. Can't feel any noticeable play in the swivels.
Swapped the wheels with the back too and no difference at all.

Steering box needing to be tightened up?

Have you checked the panhard bushes?

Nice big bar or scaff pole on socket. Lil bit of thread lock and loads of elbow grease. Might want to get a new lock washer and make sure it is bent over one flat of nut and the then bent the opposite way over the arm. Not like mine was when I bought it - it was bent over the nut only on two sides! Some numpties!!!
Unless it the washer with two lug things that go either side or the droparm, Then you only need tow bend over the nut!

Defo not like that - Still squeaks!

It's actually the castle but on the end of the drop-arm connecting the drag-link is the trouble. I'll give it a good squeeze again with a long bar when I'm investigating it again :)

They aren't that old but I suspect they could be the trouble alright. I was rushing the last day so couldn't get the front end jacked up properly to check everything so I'll try them again tomorrow as it's getting very annoying and putting me off driving it at the moment! :(

Ok I've tracked the problem to the lower UJ on the steering shaft. The top Joint appears solid. Upon inspection there appears to be quite a bit of movement/play on the lower joint just before the steering box. I realise these joints can be replaced with one of these, but how the hell to you get to it.?! It looks like I would either have to remove all of the piping or remove the wing. has anyone replaced this part.?!

Yeah I've done it.
It's easy. Undo the two pinch bolts and nut. Turn the steering wheel to aid access. once undone on both u/j's they slide up and out. they is enough slide to remove with out removing the steering box and shaft an no need to remove the wing.

long exstenion on socket with a spanner wedged underneath.
