The speedo on my 88" is under reading and this is because the vehicle has the bigger wheels/ tyres of a 109" fitted (which looks better than having standard wheels as it has paras fitted). The question is this, is it possible and would it work to fit the speedo gear (the one in the gearbox) from a 109" to replace the one from the 88"?
Or is there another way of re-calibrating the speedo?

you could just put some stickers on the speedo

No. It might as well work properly if I'm doing the rest of the landy
That would be the very last resort if I don't get it working

109 speedo ????

Thats what I was thinking but I thought it was only the actual drive gear thats different  If it is it would save buying a whole new speedo unit.

I think I've probably got one out in the garage if you're interested and you have an appropriate number of beer tokens to swap for it?

Well let's put it this way...I bought it off ebay on a whim to do exactly what you intend to do and it cost me £24.95 plus £4.50 P&P. To be honest I am unlikely to get around to fitting it in the near future as I've got used to driving and making allowance on the original speedo reading, so if you want it you can have it for what it cost me (£30) Plus of course whatever type of postage you want (standard Royal Mail parcels, recorded delivery, etc)

I've never fitted it so cannot guarantee anything, but can send you pictures, or if you're in the area then happy for you to pop around and take a look... cup of tea provided and swapping of landy stories at no extra charge!!!!

I just dug out the ebay receipt (I'm the sort of sad git that prints all these off and keeps them in a file) which says that it is for 7.50 tyres but will check the "1408" on the dial if you're interested ( I can add photos if you are)?

Cheers

I would be very interested, thank you :) Would it be much of a hassle to post pics up?

Sam.... just got in and had a look at the speedo and the number is 1376, but just done a search on Google (see link below) http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=2301 and this appears to be the correct number for 7.50 tyres that were originally fitted to LWB series land rovers..... you might want to have a check yourself to absolutely confirm that this is the correct speedo that you are after - I have also added some photos below as previously promised

Hi,

I've been looking at speedo codes etc and am slightly concerned. I've read on a website somewhere that the codes relate to the number of rotations of the tyre per mile. I don't beleive this is correct since a 750x16 tyre has a circumference in the order of 2.5m which multiplied by 1408 would give 3.5Km (over 2 miles!)

Therefore, would I be correct in assuming that the number actually relates to the number of rotations per mile of the input wire to the speedo rather than tyre rotations?

Thanks

Yes, its turns at the speedo head. There's the diff ratio and the gear in the speedo housing on the transfer box to take into account...

I really want to get a proper speedo for 3.54 diffs. Still not found a satisfactory place.
