Hi, I am Jonny and live in South East Cornwall.. I have just bought me an old dog disco for £400 that then failed its MOT with 3 pages of fail sheets (mostly rust within 30 cm's of mounts)..
I want to do it up and have borrowed a welder, and have a load of cutting disks coming from good old ebay.
No experience of bodywork welding, but I used to weld many yrs ago.. How hard can it be eh..
I am going to do the car up one bit at a time, starting on the rear end :p The bumper is shot and I need a new one, so my first question is, will a 300tdi bumper fit on my 200tdi..? (they seem to be more available)

Nice to meet you and happy be be here.. :)

Hi & welcome .
yes bumper will fit , just blank the lights. You could wire em up but not worth hastle, sounds like youve enough else to do. re rust I will say THERES NO SUTCH THING AS A LITTLE RUST it always turns out to be a lot . good luck it will be a sharp learning curve in body welding. do some seaches theres some usfull tips etc on here. i.e. box section for sills

Cheers chaps.. :)
So, bearing in mind I need to do a lot of patching up, how much steel (roughly) should I get, and what thickness..?

I raid local body shop 4 old panels and cut out what I need, or scrapy 4 box section (sills), bonnets & boots favorite for longer plates. cant say how mutch you need ,cant see it!!

Ty DD :)

I started my big project this evening after work.. I cut the rear bumper off (couldn't turn the bolts) and got the tow bar dropped. I need lots of new bolts already.. Where do you buy assorted bolts from..?
I could do pictures for this if anyone is interested..
I shall update this thread as I go, for anyone who may be thinking of doing a similar thing..

Hi i am in St Blazey and just bought my first 90 hard top 300 tdi and looking to do it up , it is in good nick but i want to tune the engine and spruce up the inside but it's a case of money and where to spend the budget !! Think i will start with the cabin first some sound proofing rubber mats front and load space ! Then the seats as i am 6.2 tall and it is a bit of a squeeze to drive , but boy they do cost a bit .still i am looking around for some good deals not in a rush to spend the money.

you can build it all from sheet steel , but start the welding practice now,buy a good welder otherwise you will spend hours grinding of chicken ****.

When you get to mounts you can fabricate, but it is allot easier to you replacement panels to keep the lines .

How much steel well that depends on how many buckets of rust you brush up.

I was wondering about the mounts today.. The rear ones look very awkward for getting the weld torch close to it..
I am borrowing the welder. All I know is its a mig and I need to get the gas and some feed..

Anyone know anything about replacing the boot floor..? Mine has gaping holes in it..

its not too bad. need to remove the eggsauce tho - have a look at this - http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/discovery-rear-body-mount-replacing-165062.html body mounts from YRM, but be prepared to change the x-member :(.

OK, I am getting scared now..! I eventually managed to get the boot floor out and it revealed this mess..

Obviously I need a new boot floor, but the side supports for it are all shot and all the bridging supports are all knackered. The wheel arches seem to be ok..
