Main issues for MOT are excessive smoking and handbrake. My advice was to sort the smoking first, if dealt with, then replace the rear brakes.

Not copper grease my mate and only if its silicon grease not sealer! 🤔.
If you don't have any other grease, wet the oring outer surface which will allow them to slide in while fitted on the pipe end.

Also, are the O rings supposed to fit snug in to the matrix? Right now the pipes slot in but they don't go in much and have little resistance
The LRO mag did a piece in the magazine in the early 2000s so way before forums.
I expect a few of the other LR mag at the time did as well, but my subscription was with LRO from 1987 after I purchased my new RR
