There’s a difference between a diesel and petrol, with petrol D1 & 2 the exhaust has to be dropped to remove the auto box sump, which can’t happen if a cross member is below, hence its removal is required. Same with early RR and others with a similar box, that doesn’t have a fill plug.

LR has a history of siting X members in awkward places, as in the case of the series vehicles. Unsurprisingly the Army specified their stock with bolt-in versions of the gearbox X member rather than the standard welded

I still haven’t got round to refilling my box back up yet, been busy.
My box has a dipstick but no filler, I was going to use the dipstick hole.
What was the device from B&Q used to do the refill?

Dipstick hole is the filler.

Use a funnel in the end of the dipstick. Best not to pinch the one out of the kitchen.......

This is the sort of thing I used, I just cut off the lance so I had about 4” left to stick in the hole (oh matron!). Stick a gallon of ATF in, pump up the pressure and squirt it in. All the fluid is contained so no mess to clear up after.

It does the job and is a lot cheaper than the car shops will sell you.

Got round to putting the oil in today, made sure the six retaining bolts where tight and the pan was seated properly.
Put five litres in. Down the dipstick tube. Cycled through the gears a few times and then checked the level. Engine at idle, gearbox in neutral.
Level reads a little low. But was in a rush as weather is awful.
I will recheck tomorrow when I put the cross member back on.
Got to take the old oil to the recycling centre tomorrow as well.
There was nearly seven litres that came out into my drain bucket.
I guess it had been over filled, or does more drain back to the sump when they have sat for awhile?
