Google tells me that a 'Californian Stop' is an unlawful disregard for a stop sign, in which you should bring your vehicle to a complete halt, assess your intended manoeuvre, then proceed when safe to do so.

Colloquially referred to as "running a stop sign"

Don't have that problem with my RRC, despite it lacking the more modern BW chain-drive transfer box but if you've got slack it's going to be the T. 'box rather than the ZF.

But... If you've ever driven Renault/Citroen's AL4, AD4 or the DPO auto box, they do indeed change down when slowing.. the box also has a better grip on the engine speed on and off the throttle. But then they don't weigh around 2+ tonnes...so you can appreciate why the P38 zf box, for example, has a bit of give in it!!

Volvo bought Daf, then put the transmission in the 340.

Couldn't the Daf go as fast in reverse as it could forwards?

Personally, I prefer to hear engine note changing with gear changes.

I now keep away from any thing French and drive through the country as quick as possible, other than stopping for one or two bottles of their wine and of course petrol.

All the autos i've driving change down when required when slowing down, although being German built you won't know about it, so no need to drive any French rubbish to find that out.
