hi

hope u didn’t mind me saying but reading through the threads ref how autoboxes works etc its been extremely fascinating and very impressive with the knowledge

apart from my brain having a melt down in trying to understand it , alas still a very interesting subject

does LUC stand for lock up clutches please , yeh i know, lol

preferred to ask in a separate post as i felt it rude asking in someone’s else’s post and just wish to learn a lot more and see there’s gearboxes without a torque converter, that’s if i’m reading right , DSG type with the twin clutches ?? , mind blowing

Direct Shift Gearboxes are common a lot of cars from VW to Maserati etc, etc, the early days they were just a clutchless gearbox, Maserati, I understand recommended the dual clutch pack was changed at 55-60000 miles that why a sold mine, plus the cost of 4 tyres and another service. :(

ouch , it was only when i was reading through some articles on the Zf that i came across these dual clutch gearboxes , thought the zf gearboxes were complicated enough but they look a whole new level

with having any vehicle i do try and understand it as much as i can :)

Yes for example 4th or 5th at 30mph 7th at 50mph then will drop 3 gears when you put the loud pedal in the carpet. It’s the same problem I had with the merc c63. However incredibly smooth if driven sensible it will change and won’t even feel a lunge

ah i see , thks, it’s the first time i’ve had a 6 x speed box and must confess the gear changes are extremely smooth

but got to admit within the land rover models i still feel the rangies are the ultimate

My mate's got a Disco4 with 8 speed. It is a lovely car to drive. Way smoother than my P38, although WAY more expensive. My cousin has just bought the Disco4 but slightly older with a 6 speed box. He reckons by the time he has chipped his the fuel economy will be the same or better. Will let you know when (if) he does it and has some real world figures.

The cranks are supposed to last longer on the eight speed !

Same old story everywhere, complication=expense when it goes wrong.
At one time autos only had 2 gears (powerglide) my old Ventora had one coupled to 3.3L straight six, it would beat many more expensive cars off the line & was plenty fast enough, yet still managed 18mpg.

No need to feel Range Rover's are the ultimate as the are, they are the top of LRs product range and depending on spec costing beyond £100,000 plus, but than other manufacturers have an equivalent in their lineup and could possibly exceed the RR.
As for smooth auto gearboxes I've never found the standard 4speed ZF harsh, maybe that's because I've been concentrating on my driving in the last 30 years with that model of gear box :)

The thing I've found with modern multi ratio auto boxes is the speed the ratios change up or down, based on cars that is and using the steering wheel paddles :)

see lexus now do a 10 x speed, that should be fun if u slow down quickly and if it can keep up, lol

does seem that virtually every manufacturer is making a 4x4 or suv as they like to call them , even lamborghini are getting into the act, aston, bentley , rolls etc

only comparison i have is with a jatco gearbox and must admit the ZF i feel are considerably nicer to drive , indeed with regards to driving i tend to allow the box to use its gearing and braking torque instead of hammering. the brakes on, suprising driving with smoothness along with anticipation of what’s not just in front of u but the height advantage in looking so much further ahead can allow to slow down so much than just sitting on the brakes

didn’t realise at first in how much software also controls the gearchanging along with how many sensors throughout the vehicle is relies on , all about learning how they work in tandom , alas also the fault finding and learning what they each do

know auto are supposed to wear brake pads out quicker , but know with many of the larger landies it doesn’t help with them weighing 2-3 ton and taking some stopping , often see on the motorway when traffic is forming how many leave it late and then slam there anchors in when in fact most of the time can just take ur foot off the accelerator and allow a majority of the engine to slow u down and smoothly

never tried a paddle gearbox , do u find them better in comparison or just a different way of driving with neither pros and cons , not keen on the rotary style gear selectors

i do indeed have an auto and maybe naively thought they did change down ratio by ratio , so are u saying they just skip to the most appropriate gears

see, that where it’s good to learn from a far more knowledgeable person than ur good self and always appreciate it,

I'm with you when I comes to motorway driving, and with possibly seeing a hold up a quarter/ half mile a head there's time to judge which lane is stationary and which is moving, so giving the opportunity to change to the better lane in advance, or as you say, just off the pedal and just let the vehicle slow on it own till u reach the tail enders, something that I appreciate with the seating height of my disco.
It's a lot different when driving a normal car I'm always slamming on the brake due to the lack of forward vision when bombing along in the outside lane with the rest. :D

It has been stated before, autos wear their brake pads out quicker, that's something I can comfy as sadly I've never driven two compatible vehicles one being auto the other being a manual. :(

indeed that’s what i also like with the disco of the increased height , also driving to the conditions , we’ve all seen the nuts jobs overtaking when snow and ice has been on the ground, yet because they’ve been in a 4x4 they think they can drive the same as on a summers day , sheer madness

would assume the average life of pads is around 40,000 miles, but of course depends on driving style

also is sometimes difficult trying to establish actual facts from different web sites or u tube videos ref auto boxes and how they work, now just sticking to the main manufacturer sites so at teast i then know it should be accurate
 
there was one thing i wished to ask ref ZF gearboxes pls

was a subject called the California stop, where from a low speed if u take ur foot off the accelerator then back on it feels like slack being taken up

is it the transfer box that’s causes this or the gearbox itself , once again apologises asking the stupid questions
