Hi there. I have a 300TDI Discovery fitted with ZF automatic transmission. I noticed the engine RPM will drop tremendously i.e. from 3000RPM to 1800RPM when the gear shift from 3rd to 4th. The RPM then slowly increase from 1800RPM to more than 2500RPM then only I can accelerate again. To over come it, I usually manually shift it to 3rd, picks up enough speed and RPM then manually shift it to 4th.

Please advise what is wrong. Thank you in advance.

at what speed is it that it locks up

Lock up is normally 50ish mph in 4th gear
Slightly to fast for towing heavy stuff and is bloody annoying

Have you checked the gearbox oil level?

Its been stated before many times that the auto box in it present form wasn’t suited for the Tdi engine.
Carry out a road test following the information below which gives u an indication of what should happen.

No issues with an auto when there’s a petrol engine in front of it :)

Yes. I have serviced the transmission fluid. So in order for me to keep the 3rd gear stay longer, I have to either manually downshift or slam the accelerator for the kickdown to come in. So annoying.

I have done the road test as per the manual. The only issue I faced now is the engine RPM would drop after upshift from 3rd to 4th. When the RPM drops, I slam the accelerator and kickdown occurs then it will downshift to 3rd gear. With this kind of driving pattern, it is as if I'm driving a Toyota.
