Lovely Shropshire...
Hi all.

I don't come to this section very often as i have a Classic on lpg but.....i would like to here from anyone who has a TD5, what kind of real world mpg's you get and any common faults on say a T plate.

I will go snooping around the forum for threads but any help would be most welcome

Cheers, Nick.

I reckon my 2000 td5 gets about 30mpg and I have a heavy right foot

Not had mine that lone but so far i have had problems with corroded Ace pipes and the rear air suspension had ben replaced with springs just before i bought it both of these items seem to be a common fault.

Others claim that the head gaskets often need replacing but touch wood im ok for now.

Oh and doors not unlocking seems to be another problems as well.

Im sure others will add to this list soon

I get 25mpg outta my T reg 110 TD5. It's got special track tyres which aren't renowned for economy and it's constantly fully loaded. Being a defender it's also lower geared than a disco. Nylon dowels, pourus heads, oil pump bolts and oil in the ecu loom are just some of the common problems with early td5's.

I've got a 2001 Td5 and general running its doing about 26/27 mpg. I'd say its a bit thirstier than a Tdi. I think it runs very rough at between 3000 and 3500 revs so make sure the car you intend to buy runs smoothly.

As for faults, I've replaced the injector harness, which was causing a misfire and the engine mountings were broken too. Oh and my thermostat was faulty too, which was causing underheating. Hard to spot on that one as the temperature gauge is one of these "nanny" type units which reads central when the engine is within acceptable temperature range ie about 75 to 110 deg C.

I've heard the Cylinder head cracking isn't uncommon, which left unchecked can get diesel in the oil, which can wreck the bottom end too. Also another fault I heard of is oil pump drive pulley comes loose, but only on very early ones.

One slightly scary thing about the Td5 is how little reconditioning work is possible. For instance you can't regrind the crank, reboring the cylinders isn't possible and because the head is heat treated landrover advice against skimming. Consequently, if your engine does ever go pop, it can be big bucks to fix (the On the plus side, they are a nice refined motor when everything is going.
