Hi guys im new to the site, so hello everybody, i wasd wondering if you could give me your thoughts and advice on a 90 i am considdering buying.

The car is a yellow G reg 90 making it either 89 or 90 model year, It has vairous upgrades including a 3 inch lift on procomp shocks and full black chequer plate kit. also fitted are black 8 spoke steel wheels with off road tyres possibly coopers?? with plenty of tread. I has undergone a 300tdi engine replacment at some point with LT85 gearbox and is believed to have done arround 100,000 miles. it appered to drive well and did not smoke although there was an occasional noise from the propshaft UJs i think due to the ammount of lift and having standard propshafts on.

from a quick inspection the chassis appeard in the most part to be sound with only one major rust issue on the rear crossmember. the bulkhead had minor surface rust in one place and the rear door would be in need of attention at some point but seemed ok other than that.

the place that is selling it is a local land rover specialist and is belived to have a good reputation. they have carried out most of the work on the vehicle.

The asking price is £2500 with a full MOT and 6 months Tax.

in your opinion does this look like a good buy? also can you suggest things to watch out for. Thanks:cool:

That's a good price (quiet cheap in fact) Check chassis, outriggers front bulkhead, and footwells for rot. As long as they're fairly decent and it doesn't smoke then I'd say buy it. Take someone with you who knows landies and has a calm head. and take it for a good testdrive.

Mmmmm, that 3 inch lift may look fab but the extra strain it all puts on suspension and transmission may prove costly. The chassis was not designed for it and road handling will be shocking, especially with monster tyres on as well. I would offer 2k, there are plenty of 90's out there. the 300tdi sounds great, check cam belt and have a compression test cos head gasket always goes on no4 cylinder. My 1988 90 has a 200tdi with a td alternator and td air filter so look out for bodged engine replacement work. Check the swivel housings on the front axle carefully, if pitted the job will cost £100 plus for both sides (thats if you do it yourself). I would look at 5 or 6 landys and go for the most standard one out there, getting it mechanically sound before worrying about suspension lifts and chequer plate etc. I dont want to put you on a downer it is probably a cool wagon but check out a few more as well.

Hi Darkangel,

Where abouts in the country are you?

I bought a yellow 90 from my local specialist back in May with a 2.5 N/A engine and all the standard bits and bobs and it's great!

Take a good look around the engine oil filler cap and rocker cover for oil leaks. It's usually a sign of nackered piston rings or a worn cylinder block. You'll want to have the garage sort anything like this before you buy the car or immediately after.

Thanks for all the good info guys, still any more would be apreciated.
As you asked, I am based in the birmingham/solihull area.

I have a reasonable list of things to look for now for when i go back to look at the vehicle.

Thanks again.
