Attached are images of an article in the new copy of a well known classic car magazine. The main feature article is titled 'Ten Top Buys for 2019' and lo and behold alongside the Jaguar XK8, Vauxhall VX220, Jenson Healey, Morgan, Triumph GT6, Lotus Elite, Aston DB9 and last but not least, the Bentley Arnage - was a full page inclusion of the D1 and D2. You may be able to read the journos text in my images. Interesting read and what a bunch of stablemates our vehicles of choice have been placed alongside.

Hahaha! To be honest, as a regular reader of various classic car journals I was very surprised, pleasantly, to see D1's and 2's featured in this way and as I said, alongside such exotic true classic cars. However, the reasoning outlined for the recommendation in the article is clear for us D owners to understand, ie, the capabilities of a Defender with added practicality and ride comfort and affordability, beyter as a family mpv, better mile munching cruiser etc etc etc. Have you seen what dealers are asking for decent or even semi decent Defenders now......un believable.

Many people have said ove the years, the disco is the thinking mans defender and a 1/4 of the price to boot.

I’ve never liked Defenders and have always thought the disco 1&2 as a poor mans Range Rover

I think of a disco as a true universal vehilce that can do all sorts and as they are so dull looking no one bats an eyelid at them.
In my eyes the only thing a range rover has that I would like is the more powerful engines.
Im on my fifth disco

I think there is a conceptual and very practical split from D2 onwards. D1s and D2s are like family friendly Defenders, share many of the same components, are just as capable, just as customisable and almost as easy and cheap to fix by a DIY owner. D3s and above are more akin to Range Rovers, still good off road, but difficult to modify, completely reliant upon electronics and more challenging to maintain by the owner. Like all modern cars electronic obsolescence will eventually make them impossible to sustain.
For me the D2 is the sweet spot - a comfortable and capable vehicle with minimal electronics that I can take overland and fix if it breaks and sustain in the long term. I'm not surprised prices are rising, they are incredibly good value right now.

After reading this article I have to agree 100% they are rising in price daily. I have a Disco 2 Td5 for sale, a snip at £31000 only 2,000,000 miles on the clock, though I think it may have been clocked. Truck weighs in at 4 tons, so I suspect it may have a few patches on the chassis. Don't miss this one, it's one in a million.

Thats me fooked then, was thinking of a nice V8 disco 2 in the future

looks like the only ones i'll be able to afford will be clapped out ones


Since looking at Disco's i can see why they're rising in value.

#1 rugged good looks

#2 As good or maybe even better than the defender off road

#3 can seat up to 7 people in comfort without rattling ya teeth out.

#4 quite simple to maintain.

#5 Tows well

#6 Has a country set charm about it..

We have a pair of Disco 2 Td5 at a dealer up our end, one for sale is a 2003 at £7,250 with 96k on the clock, the other a 1999 at £4,000 with 146,000 on the clock. Not particularly cheap are they?.

I like this promo brochure image, nice one! And I agree that the comet alloys work very well, my standard alloys on my epsom green alongside a mates black one with comet highlights that fact.... I'll monitor fleabay!

Yep hurricanes look nice but i love the Comets

Another D2 mention in the same edition (Jan issue of classic motoring). A regular journo contributor who owns a D2 alongside an XJS sharing his activities with the readers.

Agree about the comets which mine came with and I got an excellent second set from Ebay for £50 plus delivery

Ever sat in the back of a D2 on the dickie seats?? no way any adult cold class that as comfortable............

I think it's saying seven people not seven adults ie five plus two in comfort which I would agree with. Seven adults no.

Did BMW have any input at all in the design and manufacturing process of the TD5 engine? I'm new to the brand so wouldn't know as well as you guys... if BMW owned JLR during that period then surely they would have had a lot of input?
