I was just stood there in front of the radiator looking at the cracks in the top thinking I'll post this up on the farm....my arm didn't get away so well though...

That's the trouble with Plastics/resins, when they go, they just "GO".
I had the top-hose spigot just "snap" off the rad on my old Merc in the same manner. Luckily I was safely inside the car looking through the cloud of steam, not fending it off with my forearm.
Hope you both get patched up pronto.
 
I have had 2 go, I now have an all metal one in the project car. I will be fitting a GEMS V8 RAD when the one in my daily driver goes again but a metal version.
Plastic is not up to the expansion and contraction that occurs with the temperature changes.
Never work with bare arms.:(
 
Rather an arm than an eye! Go get it checked out dude, it's not just water in there that burned you. My granny would have cut a spud in half and held it on there, something to do with the starch?

Was the fan running when the rad popped?
All sat quite happily ticking over and no fan at that point. I'll check the electric thermostat.
I had no concerns about an overheat..:(

Had you been driving it then stopped and left it idling or was it just idling for a while after start up?

I had done a twenty minutes drive,
parked outside the garage, turned it off,
Restarted 5 minutes later and it sat idling while I checked around the engine bay.
The whole length of the radiator was cracked both sides along the top ridge.
