firstly on the front timing cover left of fan is a little cover plate for the diesel pump pully. remove 3 bolts(M10 head) and you can see the pully, turn engine over on crankshaft pully nut (27mm spanner or short socket) until the biggest of the three holes is approx at 11o'clock, put a 9mm drill bit in the hole of the pulley till you can push it in approx 25to30mm
climb under car and through the flywheel drain hole look with a torch to see if the notch in the flywheel is in view, if not move the cranknut a little and you shoul be able to see the notch, REMEMBER you have locked the pump so DO NOT FORCE the engine to turn with the drill bit in the pump pulley/sprocket
if you have done this you are at TDC,
you can only push the drill bit home through one of the pump pulley bolts as the other two are partially covered from behind.
Takes 2/3mins to do
HOP this helps out
