Hi all. I need some help.

I have a 120k 02 plate full fat L322 Td6. Around 14 months ago the gearbox lost drive so I had it rebuilt by a local company. Around a month ago, I first got the trans failsafe prog error. I did some research and decided it was the range shift motor on the back of the transfer box. New one on, fault cleared, all good. The error is now back again however, I also now have the traction control, handbrake warning and ABS lights illuminated too. The error is active as soon as I switch the car on. I can't select low ratio and it's locked into one gear (not sure which gear yet). My mate is an AA patrol and he pulled off these codes with his laptopamabob.

I changed the battery at the weekend to eliminate the low voltage errors but that hasn't changed anything. Can anybody help me?

Your reply should have been Bemble or Saint, I am not in their league !

My thoughts would be, does it start and run but locked to one gear, locking in one gear I believe is the fail safe mode, locks in 3rd or 4th.
The faults although read may need to be cleared after fitting the battery using RR specific diagnostics, multiple electrics faults normally points to battery so is the battery fully charged and alternator putting out around 14.5 volts ish?
Was the shift motor new or second hand ?

You could try the shift motor calibration procedure to see if that stirs anything into life.

That's all I got for now as am away but might give you some ideas
The transmissions are known to fail again if the underlying valve block issue isn't resolved during rebuild but seems more electrical or your replacement transfer motor has failed or got confused during a flat battery episode.
RR specific diagnostics like allcomms are really helpful but hopefully somebody else might chip in with better knowledge
I think that is the correct procedure for calibrating the TB motor but had to search as not at home, putting the transfer box into neutral is similar procedure I believe but download a copy of Rave and have a read

Having had a quick read of one of bembles posts on another forum he did mention that trying the recalibration could get it stuck in neutral or low if it's faulty and also if the TB is in neutral in renders the parking brake ineffective I believe

Thanks for the reply. I spoke to guy today and explained the symptoms. He seemed to think it could be a transmission ECU fault. I will try the calibration procedure and report back!

it's not one i have heard of but you never know, the ECUs normally get confused by what they are being told and just start spouting random stuff, bit like me after about 6 pints of Guinness.....(or maybe 1)

Did you reset the Steering Angle Sensor by turning Lock to Lock once you fitted the new battery?

This process (if not done) will clear the HDC, ABS and EAS warnings......if you did do it and they are still there, then I'd start looking in to fault codes in the ABS and EAS ECUs......

The ABS ECU, EAS ECU, Engine ECU and Gearbox ECU all have connections to the CAN bus to discuss important things! if the CAN is blocked by an errant ECU holding the signal either High or Low, it will fault out on the systems connected to the CAN.

It shouldn't cause a headache for the Gearbox or the Engine ECUs but they will moan about it in their fault code lists.

From the fault lists, it would appear you still have Transfer Box shift motor/switch issues or the wiring thereto.

Interesting article, it's almost a carbon copy of one of Bemble's posts I believe on fault finding the potentiometer from a few years ago but what saint is saying is the same thing, the transfer box shift motor houses the potentiometer but as it's not available separately the only way to fix is to replace the complete motor although there has been limited success i believe in repairing them.
Good find though

interesting read....

Yes, his issues do point to a Shift Motor (or wiring to it) issue...I also noted he doesn't mention doing a Steering reset as he also has ABS/HC/EAS faults etc.....if they still show after doing that...it could be a CAN error as some ofthe faults also seem to show that.

He hasn't replied, so maybe he is still licking wounds!

I notice in the article that they bought a second hand motor and made a repair from it. As I freely admit I know nuffing but seemed too coincidental to let slide.
