Yes another vibration, CV joint, viscous coupling problem

Hi all

It all started a few months ago just after fitting a 2” lift kit.
The Freelander developed a vibration the only way I can describe it is, it was like sitting on a washing machine on full spin.
Please don’t ask how I know this it belongs to another forum:eek:
Anyway after searching through different threads I come to the conclusion it was the prop shaft bearings. So about two weeks ago just after the nearside and the tail gate window regulators decided they did not want to operate any more. I ordered two prop bearings three universal joints and the regulators.
Anyway not having time to fit them they have sat in the shed for the last couple of weeks.
Unfortunately in this time it has developed a constant knocking under acceleration.
So today was the day I had to have a look.
Firstly I jacked the car up and put a bar through the prop and tried turning one of the wheels to check the viscous coupling. The wheel turned but only just with all my effort.
So I then dropped the prop and looked at the bearings. Yes you guessed it they seemed ok
I stripped the prop anyway and fitted new bearings and universal joints.
While the prop was on the floor I put two 18” bars through the UJ’s and tried to turn them in opposite direction to check the VCU it was just manageable with all my 15 stone on them. Is this normal do you think?

I then took the car for a spin without the pro fitted and yes the vibration and knocking is still present:mad: I know I should have done that first.
The vibration is not quite as bad probably just on rinse now;)
But the knocking is the same. I climbed underneath again and give a tug on the front drive shafts. The O/S has movement at both ends but the N/S does not have movement at all. This confuses me a little as the knocking sound seems to come from the N/S:confused:
So I think the next step is CV joints but do you think I will need inner and outer ones or does anybody have any others ideas before I spend more money.

Hope you all have a nice Christmas with lots of presents

Cheers Steve

After looking around for more info I found out you cannot get inner CV joints it is all part of the drive shaft.
Expensive:eek:
Also on paddock’s site are listed two different CV joints. One is a lot cheaper than the other.
Obviously one must be genuine Landover. But is there much difference in quality between the two?
I think I will take a trip to my local independent tomorrow ask him to check the VCU and his opinions on the CV joints. Hopefully he will say it’s just the outer ones I need.
I once changed CV joints on a fiester many moons ago. The problem I had then was getting the pinch clip and boot over the joint. It was as if the clip was too small and I ended up using a large jubilee clip. it never got a good seal and constantly leaked grease.
Are the Freelander any easier or is there a knack to fitting them?

If its only knocking on slow speed at full lock, then it should only need regreasing, however you have to replace the gaiter as well, you should get grease and circlip with gaiter when you buy....

if its knocking when accelerating then its the inner cv joints worn, which means replacing cv... not to difficult, if you can remove driveshafts ok then you'll be fine.

as for you going wrong with your fiesta, thats because you obviously didnt use the proper circlip, ensure you get the right one from landrover and fit it securely if doing to your landrover....
