You might have seen my recent film of the DISCO 1 turning over in Bala forest and I did get a few comments about winching techniques and safety. Some valid points about the numpties milling around too close to the action but I personally thought we did a good job. Obviously while it’s in that position all the fluids are running either out or into places you don’t want them and we got that back on 4 wheels in under 7 minutes. Considering the ditch it was in that’s not bad.

Anyway, I found a video from the first time I ever winched at a pay & play site in Wigan. Christmas trivia quiz. Spot the number of winching no, no’s. Fairly embarrassing watching it back but you live and learn. The winching bit starts at 3.16.

7 mins is still quite a while to get it done

Lol. What to get 3 people out first, unspool your winch and hook it up?!? I don't think we could have done it much quicker!

Having been in a car on its side and gravity pushing you over, that's no mean feat! Also if you watch the car accelerates for a while after its turned. The drivers foot had jammed by the accelerator some how!

Winch errors:
No gloves
No winch sail
No tree strop
Wrapping the winch cable around a tree and hooking back onto itself a big no-no
Spectators within danger zone if cable snapped
winch anchor point too close to car, means winch has less pulling force as has to work harder.
If using wire rope, which I don't I would have had the bonnet up on the car in case the wire snapped.

Bonnet up for wire. That's interesting and never heard that before but makes perfect sense! Long since swapped to rope now though!

Ellebarto,

Arn't you an AWDC member??

Do you trial with them??

I once sawone of the AWDC guys winch out a halfshaft from a bent axle bounced quite well off the caravan behind it!!

No mate. I'm a forum member but that's it. I try to get to as many places as I can to stretch myself and learn more but I'm really a green laner with the odd bit of pay and play thrown in now and again!

Only other thing would be to free spool the line out and maybe wonder lead passed through to the driver in the cab so he had control
