To improve performance of the engine, I gather you mean increase how much power it develops.

The diesel engine operation isn't exactly complex. Its a case of either improve the quality and size of the 'bang' at injection time, or its reduce losses. In the scheme of things I would say the losses aren't a significant issue. Therefore you need a bigger 'bang'. To do so will first need more oxygen (higher turbo pressure increase compression pressure and heat, but will stress the engine so best not fiddled with. Increased intercooling to increase air density, force more cooling air through the matrix, but whatever you do you can't go colder than ambient without a heat pump, which uses power).

Assuming that you have now devised a cuning method of increasing the air charge without increasing the losses and without leading to the engine failing due to over stress, you will now need more fuel injected to take advantage of all this air, and thats a chipping job.....

Other ideas are to reduce transmission losses. Remove the rear drive shaft and VC will help do this, but this depends on what you want to use your Hippo for as its obviously no good off road like this (Contensious issue alert).

Fundamentally what are you expecting? Its a glamorised workhorse machine at the end of the day that is the best (Another contensious issue alert) fit between a normal road car and an off roader. It will do nether well as a result.

Can you provide more information about what you are thrying to achieve. After all, if you want a good 0-60 time you don't want a 4x4.

I have a Rover Ron magic box, EGV by-pass and a K7N air filter, the lot should cost about £200. (Sh-t off a shovel springs to mind)
