Hi guys
I am in the middle of a new galv chassis up rebuild on my 1970 2a, I have fitted my old 90 200tdi engine but as the original timing case was damaged at sometime in its past where the power steer pump mount fits I have replaced it with a disco one but use the original Def 200 manifolds so I could install the intercooler pipes better, I was planning on keeping the alternator in its original place on the disco timing case but have realised that the intercooler pipe that fits to the Def inlet manifold would foul the alternator.
Has anyone else had this and how did you sort it :(

I did this on my disco 200 into s2 conversion, you can also buy ready made kits on ebay.

Are you using the power steering pump if not Glencoynes website shows how to fit alternator without steering pump bracket.

I never gave it a thought before but thinking of fitting a 300tdi exhaust manifold and turbo as it will allow me to fit the alternator in its proper place, allow me to work with the intercooler pipes better and then I can fit a S Parker 300tdi into series 2/3 exhaust, when all this is fitted it mite allow me to fit and pipe the air filter better as I am thinking of fitting the air filter between the inner wing and footwell but will see :)

S**t I nu that would happen there was always an unproven myth about using the original oil bath air filter with a 200/300 tdi and everyone said the tdi would suck the oil out of the air filter and so would need to fit a different air filter, unfortunately I have lobed the battery tray off the new galv chassis but I still have the tray and the oil bath air filter so if that's the case then I mite look at re-introducing the oil bath air filter but probably in a different place if that's possible, Mmmm something else to look at ;):D

Not a problem according to several that have done it for years.

I was always under the impression that the incoming air passed through the oil then up through the mesh which removed the excess oil allowing clan air only through, where in fact what happens is the air accelerates down towards the oil then makes a sharp 180 degree turn back up though the mesh, during the sharp turn any dirt/debris is shot into and trapped in the oil.
30 odd years Ive been spannering and only found this out 2 years ago!

Read lots of comments about cant be done with tdi etc, but thought bollakcs Im going to do it anyway and to this day there is not a drip of oil anywhere in the intake and intercooler pipework, engine fitted April 2011.

I also didnt see one modern paper filter set up that didnt look like a lash job of some sort, pet hate of mine same as when you see a tdi converted 90/110 air filter set up a;ways lets down event the best installs, tbh even the factory set isnt the best.

I forgot to say if you look at the pic under the air filter trunking you can see the high mount alternator and also note the exhaust goes up and out the inner wing as it cant go down because of the pto driven winch shaft.

Yeah I just hope there is enough room somewhere under the bonnet to fit the series air filter as I am using a tdi rad and intercooler set up so I may have to make a bracket to come off the 4 pre drilled and threaded holes on top of the timing case and somehow fit the filter in that area if I can but I will no better once the o/s/f wing is on :)

I think thats how the 300tdi filter is mounted in the 90/110, make sure you use rubber buffers between filter housing and its support bracket.

I used a cut down Disco air box fitted with a 2.5 TD air filter, its now about the same size as the oil bath filter. Mines a DI conversion so retains the series rad. Its fitted to the old series frame with some over center catches.
