Reconditioning a 200tdi your self ?

Hi guys
Before i retire in a few years time i want to recon my disco 200tdi my self as i don't know the history with mine and ran it for the past 5 years alls ok but want to know is it really worth it over getting an engine rebuilder to do it
 
I suppose that would all depend on you.

How much patience do you have if you have a setback?
How much do you know about taking engines apart and measuring/assessing condition of stuff?
Do you want to learn?

Because the engine builders do it all the time they know what to expect, have all the tools, but often will replace more as they have to give some sort of a warranty.

You will probably end up with some new tools, Bonus :oops:.

As for the cost I have no idea, its the therapeutics that make you a happier man, and gives an excuse to get out of the house.

The other side of the coin says if it isn't broke why fix it;).

A 200 will run quite well even when it is totally shagged.

Does it use much oil?
Do you fill the oil above the N mark?
 
If the bores and the crank shaft are undamaged, sure, why not? If you've a good engine re bore service nearby then absolutely.
 
Basically I (my apprentice has done the actual work!) have replaced all seals, gaskets and generally anything that is out of spec. I have spent some £500 on parts. The engine should run for another 200k no problem.
 
If it needs doing easy to do yourself and you get an appreciation of where it’s robust bullet proof reputation comes from,
I did my 200tdi here with help from others as reqd.


this is in my S3 now and over last year been refurbing the 2286, this had minimal bore wear but I still got it rebored whereas the 200tdi engine was measured up for wear and was in vgc but still spent hundreds on bits
 
Unless you think it's been abused you might want to relax and be safe in the knowledge that the 200 tdi's are properly built to last. Got one here well over 300,000 miles and it is still cruising up and down the UK. It's done the last 200k on Mobil1, and gets quality filters regularly and tappet adjustment for its Xmas present. The garages tend to have to work fast, and have less time for the love. Think twice before opening it up unless you think it's not well!
 
So my 200tdi is shagged, and I considered sorting myself, but in the end I've elected to have a pro sort it for me and build me a new one. Peace of mind of a proper job without mistakes and getting the wheels turning sooner drove me to that decision
