Hi all

X Eng X-Brake...

Searched, found abit, looking for more..

Who has one, after a while are they still worth it?

I am looking at getting shot of my standard setup as whenever i go to a p&p it just stops working half way through the day. I have had it apart loads of times now and its all clean inside, no oil, little crud that is acceptable, but just doesnt hold it on a hill. Shoes could do with renewing but may aswell just get it done ( as an xmas prezzie to myself lol)

Just wana see if there have been any problems after x months of having it or if anyone things there is a mod i can do to the current setup to stop it being so crap.

cheers all

I think Wiltshirelandyman had one on his 90, but if i remember correctly he also said the same problems kept happening as on the standard brake?

i first upgraded to a later spec cable/drum which worked a bit better for a while but then started sticking on again and getting filled up with salisbury plain mud and not working

i kept putting off buying the x brake because of the cost, but once i got it and fitted it ,it was bloody brilliant

my advice if you can afford one defo get it

i also been thinking about it but the price :/ so i looked on ebay for a jcb caliper as that what they say they use and one on there £35 (as long the cable fitting it the same ) then all you have to buy is the plate and disc :)

so why waste £300 ? - fook all wrong with the standard brake if it's adjusted correctly and flushed out from time to time

I have an X-brake, it's brilliant. I put off getting one for ages because of the expense and my determination to stick with the original drum brake. I have an occasional drip of oil from the gearbox output, even after new bearing and seal eventually it collected in the drum and contaminated the pads enough to make standard brake hopeless and I tired of cleaning up the pads. I fitted the x-brake 12 months ago and haven't had to touch it. It takes on the slightest pull to hold the vehicle solid.

talking about hand brakes...

is it a problem/damage anything by leaving it park in gear and with no hand brake at all?

apart from it probably not being legal ?

well, its in private property anyway... but i got to the habit of doing it when I had my disco and the handbrake kept sticking ( till i cleaned it)

so with the 90 i do the same, leave it in gear, handbrake off and choke one wheel...
but can this damage anything in the gearbox?

would'nt of thought so mate been doing it with all 3 landies i've owned with no ill effect
hows is your trani box now ? did the molly slip help?

havent put the molly slip in yet...
what was the proper name of the stuff again?

havent driven it for a month or so either... but the whinning noise is more than likely still there....
might be getting another transfer box and just swap it...not sure what to do to be honest.

the mechanic said it could be gearbox, but if i put the tbox in neutral and accelarate going through all the gears it wont make the noise...so I guess its tbox related?

Been leaving mine in gear with the handbrake off for a couple of months now, can't see it doing any damage.
Gonna clean out the drum and replace tye cable and see how long that lasts.
