Since getting the 110 back on the road I seem to be having less and less time to use it as it was intended. In fact since I have owned it it has only been up one track that was inaccessible due to snow.

I have been offered a few cars against mine recently but one that has got me thinking is a Lexus IS200. worth similar but much more suited to my day to day work.

I love the 110 and would no doubt regret it but with rising costs and not getting out in it other than work im starting to think am i doing the right thing keeping it.

Just wondering what others views are, I know it will be a little biased being a landy forum but maybe thats what im looking for ;)

oh and in case it matters its a 1989 110 CSW with defender 200tdi engine.
 
Your situation isn't so different to mine. I've got a 1988 Ninety with a 200tdi. It's my daily drive - country lanes and then into town, so apart from when the snow hits us I could drive pretty much anything.
But I'm addicted to my Landy. It's totally impractical, big, thirsty, noisy, draughty... the list goes in. There's no way I could get rid of it - it'd feel like I'd lost a limb!

Thats the feeling I get but then feel like its being wasted not getting used properly and with my dad head on there are better (warmer/safer) motors for ferrying the little one about (hes only 18mths but if he grows anymore think it may be a struggle getting him in his car seat for lack of legroom) and to use for work.

The 110 always puts a smile on my face when out in it, running costs are prob about 28mpg avg so not bad for a big ol' doozil.

have had a disco (decent allrounder) and p38 (comfy but didnt like laning and unreliable) already and couldnt go back to either after the 110.

hoping its just a phase :eek:
 
It's a 110 - plenty of room in the back for the wee one as he grows! I've managed to fit a pair of forward-facing seats in my 90 so that I can justify keeping it as a "second car" (we've got two kids). Yesterday all was forgiven as my wifes Civic broke down and so we all had to climb into the Landy to go and visit the in-laws. :)
 
When you say it's not getting used ' properly ' in what way do you mean? It was designed as a farm vehicle in the beginning but has become loved by all that own it because you can use it for whatever purpose you need.

I use mine for work with ladders, materials and all sorts strapped to the roof ( no roof rack either ) and it goes when it should and stops when it should and the choice to expand on it is huge, more batteries, 240v, interior and exterior modifications which wont affect it's original charm.

It has no specific role in today's world as such, it covers it all, whether you're a town driver or a green lane fanatic, it's irrelevant, owning and loving a Landy is what it's about.

If you trade it in, i guarantee you will regret it one way or another, but overall it's your choice, personally the only time i'd replace mine is with something worth an awful lot more so i could sell that, buy back the Landy and another one on top ;)

not getting used properly to me is it hasnt seen a green lane or track since i got it on the road, the only reason it got the run out last month was we needed a property surveying and no one could get there so had to run the surveyor up in the 110.

There are better vehicles for the road and i cant stand fake 4x4s (x5, x3, rx, gaylander :behindsofa:). IMO people who drive them would be better off with an estate car.

I dont carry tools, I wear a suit for work and if im not going to get out and enjoy it im starting to think its being wasted.

I know I would regret it which is why I havent accepted (yet) but with the jobs to do (mainly asthetics) and lack of time to do them I just think im getting a bit down hearted by it all.
 
I understand the notion of the urban 4x4 and what goers with it, but most of these are pointed towards ridiculous overpriced BMW's and the such.

A landy will fit in where ever you drive it and whatever you drive it for. A certain member on here has an army of kids and uses it as the only family car, yeah it could be replaced with a people carrier, but why, when they love their Landy?

I had to run upto North Devon before xmas and the roads were closed, but only one vehicle made it out on the roads and onto North Devon that morning, who? Me.
That isn't just to do with the vehicle capabilities but the mindset of the driver, i knew i could get out and proved as such.

You never know what's around the corner, you never know what life throws at you, but giving up a Landy for a more suitable vehicle for your life atm is another decision to make in the poath of life.

It's a tough one for you, but ignore the greenlaning side of things, it's just a bonus that comes with owning a Landy, the important part is in the effect it has on your heart and mind that matters.

This thread us getting all very deep! I have just got my 110 and do 40 miles of motorway driving in it and certainly wouldn't swap! I kno I'm abit biased as I'm still in the honeymoon period(ha!) but I'd say keep it! Lexus are too dear to fix anyway.. And very cack in snow!
 
i know the feeling ive had various fast/flashy motors but nothing compares to the sheer practicality of a landy u can chuck the dogs in the back or shoot out the sunroof and still use it as a daily runner repair bills are respectable if your spanner trained too i always was of the opinion that other than rolling it down a banking 500 quid would be my worst possible bill if a major component failed or in the case of my late dear disco who was sold because the chuff was hanging out of it ! but i bought a s3 straight away but its not really bulky or powerful enough to pull my track car behind so its going soon to be replaced with another landy no doubt

So sell the disco and p38

A Lexus IS200 is not a cheap car to run, not alot of MPG in one of them
 
Without knowing anything about your money situation it's hard to comment, BUT, would keeping the landy as a 'toy' not be a possibility, the insurance would be cheaper ( limited mileage), and obviously the running cost would be a lot lower. You could then use you 'sensible car' during the week and have the landy for your days off:confused::confused:;);););)
 
I felt the same when i had my first 90, even though i loved it i decided to sell it and buy a nice sporty comfy car. After the initial enjoyment had worn off i realised that i had made a massive mistake and started to look for another defender. It all worked out well as i got a much better defender and i have no plans for driving anything but a defender.
 
i have the same issue.

130 tipper.......daily drive......

so commuteing to work is expensive.there is a small car here that is shared between the two landys here.it works.

however i am cycling to work today to save a few quid.its dry.
i keep my workshop wear at work with boots so i can ride.there is a small cafe next to the engineers that is fair so i can travel light and only use the landy in the bad weather.

personally why buy a juicy car ?

keep the landy and get a 500 quid toyota carina or summat to commute in......it works and you keep the landy.

there is also summat quite nice about kicking a car door shut......ha ha ha ha
 
I'm not sure what you're looking for us to say? This is the LandyZone its quite unlikely that anyone on here is going to turn around and say "much more sensible idea young man. Get yourself a nice exec mobile. Much more career orientated."

I'm 42 and I have just got my first Defender, its 16 years old. The first time I drove it I smiled. My lil' girl is 10. She's becoming very brand sensitive. Yet her and every one of her friends love the Landy because its "cool, way cool."

My only regret about buying the Landy is that I was sensible for years. I had no real need for a 4x4 (I've wanted a 90 since I was 14) but I needed to be grown up and responsible.

One thing is for sure. An IS200 is simply another burb mobile but your wee boy will lust after a Landy.Case closed.
 
In the early 80's i decided to rid my self of a 109 in exchange for a Jag after nearly losing my licence on every journey due to driving at stupid mph the novelty wore of and i found it boring so got another landy a few months later i again swapped for a metro gta thinking of being practical that 1 lasted a week before i got a rangey.It never works its in ya blood landrover dna you either have it or you havn't.
 
If you do decide to get rid of your defender, at least replace it with something with at least a little character! Lex(i ????) are for garish chavs and fat bastards who only drive them because the satnav screen is 0.25 inches bigger than the one in the jaguar. Have you considered a discovery 2? I'm looking for one now and you can get a facelift 2003/4 lowish spec model for about £6000 (gs) although this will be luxury compared to your defender and almost as capable.

I drive around 40miles everyday, and probably go offroad if im lucky once a month.

Let me put it this way, I have to make an effort to go and start the Lexus and drive it around the block so it doesnt break.


Keep the Defender.
I am and Im selling the Lexus!
