would this fail an MOT ?

I have just discovered a hole in the rear section of the exhaust on my 300tdi 90.
its after the muffler, and about 2x3inches on the underside of it.
MOT is due soon so wondering if its worth me just buying a new section myself and fixing it myself, or would this pass like this (assuming everything else is ok )

im gonna have to say yes .....but would have to see a pic it to be 100% .....if your worried about it i would say its bad enough to be a fail .....anyway id fail it just to see the disapointed look on your face lol ...

1. Examine the condition of the whole exhaust system, including the silencers and mountings, for security, deterioration and completeness.

a. a part of the system missing or excessively deteriorated
b. an exhaust system mounting missing, or in such condition that it does not fully support the exhaust system

Note: An alternative mounting deice is acceptable providing the system is secure and the system is not likely to fail prematurely.

2. with the engine running

a. a major leak of exhaust gases from any part of the system

Note: A minor exhaust leak from, for example, a connection joint or a pin hole, is not a reason for rejection

Note: A durable repair to an exhaust system which effectively prevents leaks is acceptable providing the system is structurally sound

b. assess subjectively the effectiveness of the silencer in reducing exhaust noise to a level considered to be average for the vehicle



I think the answer is 'yes' - but no reason why you couldn't exhaust bandage it if you didn't want to replace for now

A tin plate wrapped around the eggzorst and held in place with jubilee clips will get it through the MOT. You could even go to somewhere such as Halfords and buy an exhaust repair kit. It's also yet anpther use for rescue tape.

For the cost of the new section you may as well just replace. Easy to do, as long as the joins are easy to get apart.

I agree. If it's summit that needs to be done straight way to get a vehicle through an mot though, bodging it may get the required pass to keep the vehicle on the road while a new part is on order.

If you can't afford to fix it , drive something cheaper to repair. But a fruit juice can around the damn thing then.

i'v found a guy who can get me a whole system de cat for under £100, would this be a good deal ?
all the bolts and stuff look pretty seized, would it be easier to give it to a garage to do for me ?
will put a pic up tomorrow of the hole
I can wait for the MOT, so it doesn't need fixed asap.

erm, it's bound to be easier to get someone else to do it! lol

In fairness it all depends on what tools and time you have available and how much money you have in your pocket, only you can really decide.

A garage will have access to air tools, gas torches and metal saws and will make short work of getting the old exhaust off.
Depending on the state of the exhaust fixings and the tools you have available you could spend all weekend getting covered in crap trying to remove it or it may come off in 10 mins.

Personally I'd do it myself, but that's just me.

Angle grinder???????? Your better off fitting new nuts and bolts anyway. Even if you have to go and buy yourself one, you could get a reasonable (cheap) one for the cost of 30mins labour at a garage

Where do they charge only £30 an hour!!
A cheapo 41/2" ya can get for less than £15.00 an i have heard of em lasting years

We sell Makita 115mm grinders here at work for £25+VAT

i think i will have a shot of it myself.... i'm gonna be getting new bolts etc, no point keeping the old ones really.
would it be worth my while to go for stainless steel ones ?

i never mentioned not being able to afford fixing it, I was only asking if this needed fixed in the 1st place to pass an MOT

I find myself needing a new grinder;-) Got something to do this coming week.

managed to fix it all up with exhaust tape and putty, will see how it all looks tomorrow once its properly set
