Would there be any reason why..

The previous owner of my landy would not fit an airfilter? Was just checking the condition of it and found it was not there! (alot of oil in airbox tho, bloody td!)
The only reason that I could think why someone would not for one is coz they think it gives it 'more power', it can't be covering something more sinister can it?

its a 19j like mine i presume

and it will still have the breather going into the air box hose

if so his air filter probably clogged with oil and caused the engine to run like a bag o spanners

clean air box

remove the breather route to chassis / atmos

stick a new filter in

- try not to do 60/70 too often .... thats the only time mines breathes !

Cool, I was guna rip that breather out and stick it in a bottle so I can monitor when and how much comes out! Do they blow oil out like that coz the piston rings are going, or pistons cracked or sumat?

Ta!

i wouldnt stick it in a bottle .... get an old oil filter or a bean can .... or extend to your chassis

bottles even with - fairly large holes in still cause excess back pressure - mine started to blow oil out of the 3 bolt holes on top of the rocker cover - atm mines vents to atmosphere and it has stopped all my leaks and no actual oil comes out the breather unless i am going along at 60/70 for extended periods which i avoid

and yes its probably cracked pistons/piston rings etc but there are reports of them living for years like this - which is good because i cant find a 200 tdi disco engine reasonable round here .... did get offered a whole V8 disco for 500 quid with LPG though !

also read that the pressure control valve or pressure relief valve (same thing i believe just refferenced differently in different places) could cause excess crankcase breather but 2 things - this engines so notorious for breathing due to ****ed rings and pistons that its probably not worth the effort to check that the pcv/prv is working and number 2 - i dont know where the pcv/prv is ! and possibly even 3 - that the folk that believe this are just deluding them self that their engine is knackered

Il get a bean can, take it for a spin, then stick it in the chassis :)

I'm after a 200tdi too, just need to find some money to spend initially! Worked out that assuming I get 32 to the gallon with a 200, il pay it (budgeted 600, doing all work myself) back in almost exactly 1 year!

Get the v8, gotta love v8's :)

Haha, like it! Not going to bother checking either..

Drill a hole in your chassis, plug breather pipe into that.

No more rotten chassis's.

On a serious note, he woulda be fed up with replacing the air filter after it gets clogged with oil, so removed it no doubt, tbh i can't see it causing a 19J too many problems, they run on squashed frogs if you can get em to ignite....

In the end i attached my breather pipe to a flexible hoover pipe and ran it under the Landy to the back as i was beginning to pass out on long journeys, kept the wife quiet though

hmmmmm, I too have this oil in the airbox issue, but thought nothing if it... Is the ring and bore wear an issue on 2.5 n/a engines too? The block is painted red....

If it is, just how much of an issue is it? Repairable/worth repairing?

Cheers

Sound cheers fella. Il leave it filterless then! And sort the breather out.

Is it normal to hear it sucking the air in when you put your head near the side inlet vent thingy..?

Not sure regarding the N/A, but based on the 19J, which has the turbo fitted, and provides more stress to the engine, the overall design was abit gimped. I'm not 100% on the issues regarding it but i have my thoughts after stripping both engines and having a good mooch around them, perhaps jamesmartin can elaborate abit on it.

Not sure on the ' inlet vent thingy '...if you mean the grille on the side of the wing, then yes you will hear some noise as it's connected to the turbo via the air filter housing, even more if you rev it ;)

That explains loads to me!!! Have most of those issues. Breather blows like a mf. Will reroute i think into chassis as headches over long distance. Think i ought to address the clattering gearbox. Hopefully just needs gearbox oil top up.
