thats ment to go into your rocker cover is it not? is there not an outlet in the top of it?
bout three quarter the way back on top

should i leave it alone? i mean i've been driving for over a year and its been neatly plugged as you can see all along. what does it do (and sorry for such basic ignorance!)?

Can't help you with this but you shouldn't feel the need to apologise for 'basic ignorance' as we all have to gain knowledge from others, who in turn gained their knowledge........

it feeds gasses from the engine internal spaces back into the combustion cycle, these gases contain oil (vapour?) and any fuel/sir mix that has escaped the piston rings, its a good idea to re connect it but if it gives you any trouble disconnect and plug it!!! the breather should be free to allow excess gasses out

look here for a more educated guess! Engine Breathing Systems
