Do I replace with a new one (cant afford it)
Do I buy a second hand one (might be same as this one)
Do I recon it myself (how difficult/costly is it)

I have a 1.4 T/B in the corner of the garage which is no use to me as it's too low geared and I have a 1.2 in the 110 which is knackered.

Can I put 1.2 gears in the 1.4 quite cheaply?
or do I have to recon the 1.2

Lots of routes, easy if you have the money but hard to choose when money is tight.:)

Just seen a 300 tdi gearbox and T/B for sale local, would this handle a 2.8 isuzu engine do you think ?

complete seal kit £25 ashcrofts or £9.70 britpart locally to me you can swap the gears from the knackered box, only difference with a defender or a disco box is tap 2 holes for hand brake- if you want some help I stripped mine and fitted new gaskets and seals in the last month.
the lt85 you have on your v8 is stronger than the lt77, that said there are some differences to lt85 diesel box, mainly the input shaft

Problem is the bearings are shot in the T/B and maybe the gears as well, dont know, so will need bearings at least.

so if you were prepared to spend the time less than £20 to cobble two together, most likely the input bearings are fecked, oil starvation

What is up with your TB? It may just be the input gear thats needing done.
Input gear was OK prior to putting it in and so was the other end, I think the bit in the middle is fooked as the shafts sound like they are floating around at times. Its ok when pulling and ok when shutting off, just when cruising it rumbles and thumps.

Just been offered a 300 tdi with rebuilt box and good transfer box for four hundred quid, what would you do??

Going to hear it running etc on Sat

it sounds like the bottom taper rollers need adjusting, remove rear output ring of bolts and the bottom shaft has a locknut to adjust it.
You could do a lot worse than drain box and remove inspection plate

Good idea, will make time at weekend maybe, cant have it off the road at the moment as it's my only transport. An I've just had two punctures

I know that money is an issue, but better the devil you know, if you pull the inspection plate i'll be around over the weekend if you want to chat
