In my quest for meaningful brakes I’ve now replaced all discs and callipers on my 2004 110.
Still wooden…. What’s next. Servo? Vac pump?

Vaccpump easy to check, and if thats okay its your servo

Wooden as in no feel, lots of foot needed and wooden stop in an emergency
Just pulled the vac pipe off, no issues there so must be a servo issue.
My old callipers has seized pistons so I had hoped it was that….
 
Do the servo test. With engine off press on the brake pedal, then start engine, your foot should go down some more if servo working. Foot does not move then servo no workey

Have a word with A1203 he's got a spare servo up for grabs

Press the brake pedal several times until it goes hard.. then turn the engine on with your foot on the pedal ;)
If there's still a vacuum then you might not notice much

Kermit is right, pump to remove any vacuum that may be left. There may be none to release if servo is totally duff.
 
Have you bedded them in if you have replace disc and pads? new discs need bedding in and "heat cycling" a few times to actually get any brake feel. I have also found that changing the pads has the most effect on brake feel as long as mechanically everything is working which with new calipers it should be.

I will also question what you are comparing it to? Are you comparing the brake fell to what they used to be and it has changed, to other defenders you have driven, both of which are valid comparisons. Or to modern cars where the brakes act like a switch and are either on and off at a feather pressure with very little graduation which is not a valid comparison.

I’m comparing with my previous defenders. I replaced discs callipers and pads… kicking myself for not diagnosing then servo failure, but I was led astray by the seized pistons that I freed off a couple of years ago.
I’d I start the engine with my foot on the brake there is no difference in feel, a sure sign that there’s no assistance. I removed the vac pipe and found the vac pump working fine. Servo on its way thanks to A1203:)
 
Half price parts!?
Yes. Somebody got a new faulty servo (that turned out not to be), supplier sent a new replacement and said don't bother sending the old faulty one (that turned out not to be) back. So that somebody flogged it on here for half price of what that he paid.
All proceeds went to charity or something heart warming like that.:)
 
Great to hear you got it fitted. :cool: I know I posted it first class, but with it being posted on Friday I thought it would be Monday at the earliest that you got it. Good old Post Office!
Pleased to hear you've got your brakes back. :) The red squirrel group are over the moon with the money. Definitely a win win :) Not so much for LR Direct's supplier, but hey ho :eek:
