Well its been a while since I have posted a Defender post :)

So where have we been....... nowhere, well clearly nowhere in the Defender. It sat for 2 1/2 years in a shed. I drove it in there (as reliable as always) and now finally I am ready to tinker with it.

Took battery's off charged, back on and it tries to start but feels flat. I have charged both batteries and tried 3 battery's so its definitely not that, they were all fully charged and green.

Before I check the earths etc I wanted to be sure. If its an earth problem would the starter try to turn even ? most earth problems don't even get that far ?

Type of engine may help;)

In tank pumps fail if not used:) so do a lot of other things.

Get a good battery & it should start.
A jump lead off the earth battery to the engine/starter area may help
Thanks Phil, I will try the earth lead thats a good quick test never thought of that.....Pretty sure its not the battery as 1 is < year old and 2 are <3 years old.

I had the charger on JUMP mode as well which should have covered the battery failing.

Earth leads are proper shti on the 200, bridge it as suggested, then run new earth leads from battery to chassis, and a second one to the engine, I also have a third at the front of engine to chassis.
If its the starter, they can be taken apart and cleaned for another life.

Result, it was the battery, I tried 2 earth straps, and then swapped to another battery without the straps and it fired right up. Both batteries had been charged on/off over the last 2 weeks, MY original battery was giving out 12.34 volts.... the secondary battery a 3 year old winching battery hardly used was giving out 11.2 volts.. so I will be taking them both to the tip.

Ironically I got it started off a nigh on 10 year old Optima Yellow top gel battery, which was my old winching battery so I will be keeping that... I thought it on the way out but clearly a matter of perspective :)
