With a hot engine/gearbox my 2.25 series diesel won't go into any forward gears in high range. If I select low range first and pull forward, I can then put it in high range and the forward gears work fine. Reverese works ok regardless. With a cold gearbox the high range works fine. Problem only seems to occur when the gearbox has warmed up.

Anyone got any suggestions/ideas?

The oil comes out of the fill hole as soon I the plug is removed, so plenty in it. In all honesty I haven't changed the oil since I aquired the vehicle in August 2013. I'll give it a change this weekend. Gear stick moves left and right and into reverse when hot, but 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th are nowhere to be seen unless I persist and select low/high.!

If its that full, also check your transfer box, the seal between the two might be leaking and it filling the gearbox from the transfer box. I'd change the oil in both anyway if its of unknown provenance. How's your clutch, is it dragging? Jack up a rear wheel and check - engine off, select a gear, one person pushes clutch in, other person tries to spin the wheel or do it with engine running but be careful not to put it in 4wd or it will jump off the jack!

Could it be the selector balls/springs playing up somehow? Don't know why it would do that when hot though. You can check all that gubbins quite easily with the trans tunnel off. Although your best bet is to pester James Martin for the answer :D

If you stop engine when oil is warm will it select all gears stationary.
Thinking clutch drag!
When it won't engage gear is it grating /grinding teeth?
Does your gear lever rotate at all , check the grub screw in alloy ball holder!

Slow response to this.......sorry.

I found a way to get over the problem.......still not sure of the cause though.

With the engine running if I select reverse, then take it out of reverse and FIRMLY pull the gear leaver rearwards and to the left as I move it into the neutral position, it will then go in all forward gears ok.

It appears that something is not lining up when coming out of reverse into neutral!?

If that's the case I'd pull the floor up and have a look at the gear stick mounting. It may just be loose, the reverse spring and flap could be bent, broken, loose or there might just be something floating around in the selectors.

The gear selector stuff on these is pretty simple and all open to look at so once the misery of pulling the floor up (angle grinder for the bolts and new scews and spire clips at the ready). You should be able to work it out.

there 3 detent springs 1 in center of box top and 1 each side behind retaining plates ,they locate selector shafts in gear and neutral unless neutral has the 3 shafts aligned perfect you wont be able to select gears this is so you can only select one gear at a time ,i presume yours is corroded or dirty making shafts ,balls and springs stiff so not free to find perfect neutral

Long time since I did one of these but as James says, also isn't there a sliding pin through the center shaft to push the bullet detents across.
