Since I've had the car it's done this, starts great first time of the day but then after a trip, sometimes, it won't start at all... you turn the key and the ignition comes on, the steering lock unlocks, but it does nothing when you turn it to crank position, just as if you had taken the starter motor off.... At first it was very intermittent but lately it has started getting worse, you now have to leave it up to an hour before it will start... sometimes it goes days and will start fine every time, yesterday it did it twice, today it did it once, but was then fine later on... sometimes a few tries and it starts....

The immobiliser and steering lock are working fine, doesn't matter which key I use...

It has had two starters and is the same with both, although the replacement was a second hand one so there is the outside chance both have the same fault!!!!

Inhibitor switch is working fine, tried rocking the stick...

I fitted a new ignition switch, just the electrical part, yesterday, old one was spotless and looked perfect inside...

Battery is super size and only a couple of months old and is fully charging at 14.2volts...

No faults showing with the IID tool that would relate to this....

When it starts it is quick and efficient with no laziness....

Sometimes it starts if you hold the key against the spring in the crank position for a few seconds.

It seems to me that it's a heat related issue and maybe something is building up a resistance when it gets hot???

Or would a failing Ignition interlock relay cause this...

Just too tight to keep changing stuff.... wish it would just pack up totally and I'd be able to get my teeth into it...

So please get your thinking heads on and fire some ideas, doesn't matter how far out or crazy they sound, it seems to be something very weird, I've had a look through the 207 threads when you search on "won't crank" and can't find any like this....

Thanks

Pete

Thanks for the thought but I don't think it's a crank sensor, they only work when cranking and something is stopping mine cranking at all...!!!
Well, then I bet it's the switch.

The tribal culture here at LZ is extremely intricate and worth a thorough study by researchers. One facet of that web of customs is the appreciation of a nice introduction by new members in the "introduce yourself" part of the forum. Had you followed that hallowed ritual, you my have gotten a quick and knowledgeable response to your dilemma instead of, after 80 some views, receiving advice from one of the local numptys.

West Slope Rover -
Are you calling me a 'local numpty'?

If so I resent that remark. And anyway I was not giving 'advice' just raising a possibility which might be worth investigating.

While I agree that an introduction is polite, I was willing to let that pass on the basis that Haylands had put forward a sensible and comprehensive post seeking help.

I would suggest that Haylands puts his location in his profile so that it appears in each post as this may help elicit local help.

I was referring to myself, Pete. Stand down.

I throw myself prostate at your feet and beg for forgiveness and understanding, I have only been a member since Feb 2011, some 3 1/2 years, but I do own a Range Rover so you can understand that I have spent most of this time stuck under, in or around the said truck to pamper and cajole it to work when I ask... and the bl@@dy thing won't even do that..... Hence I have had little time to introduce myself and follow your hallowed ritual... I shall chastise myself with an old fan belt until the blood runs and post an introduction in the appropriate section....

Oh and which switch are you talking about, the ignition switch is new...

Pete... it earths through the fixing, I've checked the engine earth but will go through them all again anyway.....

It'll be okay. But I'm still waiting for Pete's apology for not realizing I that was the numpty. ;)

I was, indeed, referring to the ignition switch.

Not with my truck it ain't...

Yeah I was hoping it was the switch....

Dippypud... Immobiliser is working fine, you can tell this as it has an electric steering column lock and you can hear it unlock if the immobiliser is working...

I'm favoring the Ignition interlock relay...

Although if this carries on I can easily fix the problem with a gallon of petrol.....

Oh and I've done a "hello my names Pete and I'm a Landyholic" thread...:)
